Funniest Movies

Post by Silverclaw »

So what do you all think some of the funniest movies are? I'm not a huge comedy movie person(tv shows are better at it) But there are some I really like and can watch more than once. :)

-Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail
-Mystery Men(Go Blue Raja!)
-Meet the Parents
-Happy Gilmore
-The Waterboy
-Happiness
-The Emperor's New Groove
-The Forbidden Zone(in a creepy, trippy kindof way)
-Tomb of the Werewolf( :P Oh, what genre was that again?)

Hmmm. . . Personally I've always been more fond of goofy anime and Dreamworks stuff, but if you want laughs via real life actors, I have a small list of recommendations:

The Replacements
Waking Ned Devine
Love Actually

And for some darker humor:
Fight Club
Snatch

Even though I think that Monty Python's 'And Now for Something Completely Different' can be really stupid, it is so funny.

Also Shaun of the Dead, the romantic comedy. With zombies.

You've already picked some of my top choices. Here's my tentative list:

The Pink Panther (original Blake Edwards version): particularly the chase scene at the end, which itself is worth the whole movie. The sequels are actually better paced and funnier overall, but the original has the single best scene. I haven't seen the remake, so I can't yet rate it.

Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail: Definite must-see for anyone who goes to Renaissance festivals.

Airplane!: Fast-paced slapstick spoofs are among the funniest of movies, but this classic take on seventies disaster flicks is the genre-defining one. Airplane II: the Sequel is also great, spoofing sci-fi.

Galaxy Quest: Another sci-fi parody, this has innocent and misguided aliens appealing to the cast of a Star Trek-like syndicated show, not realizing it's just a show and believing they really can save the day every week. It sports an all-star cast, including Tim Allen, Segourny Weaver, Allen Rickman, and Monk's Tony Schlub. It's as quotable as Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home, with great lines like "could you possibly try not to hit every single one of them!" and "whoever wrote this episode should die!"

The Court Jester: Danny Kaye plays a medieval spy infiltrating a court, only to get caught up in royal politics and family issues, in this 1956 classic. It's defining moment has to be his rush through attaining knighthood, and the joust scene, during which he tries to memorize a confusing rhyme warning of a poisoned chalice, while dealing with magnetized armor from a freak lightning strike.

A Night at the Opera: Going back further to 1935, this Marx Brothers movie and their others feature some of the earliest rapid-fire slapstick comedy routines on film. This one in particular has a great moment involving hiding in a ship cabin, only to have more people enter and hide as well, until the room is packed. Groucho Marx's witty remarks and comebacks are simply brilliant.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Werewolf": While most people prefer the Joel episodes, this Mike episode is a personal favorite. We've all sat through really bad werewolf movies, but this one has to be one of the worst. (In polls, at least a few of you ranked it higher even than Darkwolf.) The gang give it one of their best rippings of all times, with great moments like "a full moon that doggedly refuses to wane," and "come on! Dead people know what's going to happen next!"

Frasier: Not a movie but a sitcom, I none-the-less list it here, because it's one of the most consistantly funny shows throughout its run. Dr. Frasier Crane is a psychiatrist turned radio personality, with a great sibling rivalry with his brother, who is not so secretly enamoured with his father's sexy British physical therapist. His ex-police officer father lives with him and provides a sharp contrast in outlook, with his weathered recliner and little dog Edie abruptly contradicting Frasier's upper class high rise condominium.

South Park: TV series and a movie, hard edged and definitely for mature audiences only. They're not afraid to push the envelope. Indeed, they just ran a two-parter parodying their own coming under fire for making fun of Scientology, and plunging head first into the controversy of the depiction of Mohammed in cartoons.
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

Watching movies and shows is our entire family’s favorite activity and thus we have got the home theater installed recently. Our kids are not getting over of it. They have just created the watch list of the shows by Andy Yeatman for our upcoming house party on the weekend.

Hmm, never heard of those (reference the last couple of posts). Anyway, funnies! Off the top of my head? Let's see...

Funny films: A little bit of Airplane; a dab of Naked Gun; a splash of Good Morning, Vietnam; a sprinkle of Stir Crazy.

Silly films: We Are Morons From Outer Space; Attack of the Killer Tomatoes; Mars Attacks.

Funny TV? Red Dwarf; Absolutely Fabulous; M*A*S*H; Black Adder (Assorted); The Young Ones.

Bonus section - Radio: The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy (the original and best! Fite me!);

*Boops UTS on the duck-bill." Boop.

The Meeper.

Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy. Jason Statham playing a parody of every Jason Statham character ever was funny as hell.

Meh. Tropic Thunder was pretty funny right up until the producer steps on a landmine. After the rebels see the Ben stiller playing with the producer's corpse and concluding that these guys are seriously f***ed up, it sort of started to slide from there... but up until that point, I agree. Nick Nolte was particularly funny.

HHmm... There has been a lot of new movies since this thread was last used so..
Movies: Star Trek (j.j abrams) though mostly action adventure I thought this movie was pretty hilarious, DeadPool ( honestly anything with Ryan Reynolds), National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Ice Age, Ghostbusters ( the first new one)

Tv: I'll have to agree with Meeper on this one, Red Dwarf, Are You Being Served, Cheers, Night Court, Area 57 ( a pilot episode that never got off the ground) my cheeks hurt from laughing the first time I watched this.

I'm a huge fan of british comedy , and I think besides scifi, comedy is kinda my go to when I want to watch something. Put scifi and comedy together and that's gold to me
