My University's Mascot *(please read my latest post)
Because of a ruling by the NCAA, my university now has to change our mascot. Our current mascot (the Indians) is offensive.
So! What do you guys think our new mascot should be? Keep in mind it needs to be something that has some relevance to Louisiana. Either it can be an indigenous creature or a mythological creature that was revered by people in the area.
Please do not suggest:
-any human mascots
-pelicans
-mallards (or any other kind of duck)
-nutria rat
-any type of bear (I loathe bears)
-basically anything that sucks
If you want more info about the situation, you can go here. Keep in mind, I've already thought of a ton of new mascot possibilities, but I wanted to see if you guys could come up with anything I haven't thought of yet. Also, even if you do mention something I've already thought of, you might have a fresh take on it.

The Ragin' Cajuns is actually the mascot of one of our rival schools. I don't know what Kudzu is.Petard wrote:Aww, I was gonna say the ragin' cajunsRenorei wrote: -any human mascots

These are some pretty good suggestions! Keep 'em coming!

I wasn't thinking that. What kind of administration would name a school the werewolves? Especialy if it is in a highly christian area(not sure if Monroe counts) "That mascot is a representation of the devil blah blah blah." They would want something the locals and the alumnis would be familiar with because after all, everything is done to get more donations from alumni.

True...werewolves probably wouldn't fly. But, wolves might. Though neither red wolves or grey wolves currently live here, they used to. By picking either of these, the University could adopt Louisiana wolf reestablishment as a philanthropy.Petard wrote:I wasn't thinking that. Also...I'd like you guys to read some info about an idea I had recently. Please visit this page to read about an idea that I had, and tell me what you think. I'm under the same username, Renorei. You can either offer your comments here, or if you'd like, you can make an account on that other forum and post your comments there (especially if they are positive). Either way.

The Cur is what you're suggesting? Well. . . I know you mentioned the variable definitions of the word "cur," but the problem with such is that if people don't like it, they will imply that it means the opposite.
Have you considered the possibility of an animal mascot and verbal or abstract team names for whom said mascot would be appropriate? You know, like how the Tampa Bay Lightning have a firefly for their mascot, the Houston Texans have a bull, or the Detroit Pistons have a horse ("Pistons" being a reference to the automotive industry. Horsepower. Get it?).

Hmm...yeah, I know what you're saying. Although, keep in mind, we don't have to call it the cur. We could call them the leopard dogs. But anyway, do you have any ideas for an abstract team name that would work with cur?

My school, the University of West Georgia, just switched their mascot from the Braves (again, an NCAA offensiveness issue- the local detatchments of the Cherokee and Creek Nation were not amused) to the Wolves. Heck, I might even develop some school spirit now.

I hope that our school is as lucky as you were in getting a new mascot.Faolan Ruadh wrote:My school, the University of West Georgia, just switched their mascot from the Braves (again, an NCAA offensiveness issue- the local detatchments of the Cherokee and Creek Nation were not amused) to the Wolves. The two big frontrunners that the mascot committee is looking at now are the moccasins (type of snake) and the Bayou Bruins (Note: 'Bayou' doesn't actually precede specie name 'bruin'. It's just that we have a bayou on our campus and a small but powerful faction desires something that will alliterate with 'bayou'. FYI, a bruin is a type of bear.)
I'm really disappointed with both of these choices . Moccasins aren't horrible, but BEARS??!!?!?!?!?!?!? I HATE BEARS! Bears (at least the kind that used to live around here) are wimpy little cowards. Ugh.
I need to work double hard on making a professional-looking proposal for the Leopard Dogs . It's totally original, and totally unique to Louisiana. Based on their history and unusual appearance, I'd be proud to be ULM Leopard Dog!

Ok, so this is the finalized proposal that I sent to the mascot committee. Tell me what you think.

Granted, I know it has little chance of being picked. But, I felt the idea at least had merit and so I wanted to make a case in favor of it. There were plenty of other good ideas that I had (bucks, wolves, foxes, gators, etc.), but I figured tons of other people would suggest those as well, so I devoted my time to an idea that I didn't think a lot of other people would think of.
