...everyone feels like that when they are still in school, and naively feel like the most horrible thing in the world is a History Report due on Tuesday.

Despite all the tests I failed, the teasing I recieved, the nights of sleep and fun I gave up for homework, and the occsionally awful school lucnhes I was forced to eat, I look back on my Grade School years quite fondly and sometimes wish I could do them all again. (...geez...I sound like an old geezer. I'm only 24. I think it's time for me to finally go to College. Yay School!!!)

I know I didn't feel that way when I was there, though. All I could think about back then was how much longer I had to endure it untill it ended.

...but now...I'd take a 10 page report on the American revolution over dealing with cranky, unreasonable customers Any Day...

Edit: Mostly, though, I miss meeting with ALL of my freinds every day at school. Even though the thing we most talked about was how much we hated school, at least we talked about it together. We've all gone our seperate ways now, and I never see my old freinds anymore...Image

I don't miss school at all, or much of anything else about being a kid. I like having my own house, a car, and money, and not having to get permission before doing things as basic as going to the bathroom.

I do miss the free time, but I also distinctly remember hours and hours of boredom, because I had no resources and no way to get around.

Of course, the Internet wasn't around in the 80s (except as an obscure network used by universities and the U.S. government, and the occasional CompuServe or Prodigy subscriber who could afford $50-100 a month for an hour or two of text-based dial-up). But, if it were, I'd have to deal with the following problems, were I still a kid, be it economic, generation-gap, or general social:

1. Paying the monthly fee to an ISP--easy if you have a professional job, but bloody difficult if you're paid $5 for mowing the lawn every once and awhile

2. Censorship--DeviantArt would not be the same, and forget the VCL

3. Paying for a decent computer--even a baseline model is at least $400; a good one is $750 or more. $100 was a lot when I was a kid. And that's just a desktop; double that for laptops

4. Convincing parents that being on the Internet for more than one or two hours is no less unhealthy than the same amount of time spent watching TV

5. Convincing parents that routine computer maintainance is not a reason to "stop fiddling with a $1000 instrument that you could break too easily"

6. On a related note to #5, convincing parents that a good AntiVirus and Firewall program is a good investment, but spyware is not going to help North Korea get additional nuclear secrets if it accidently gets through

7. Another corrollary to #5, convincing parents that Napster is now perfectly legal, as is CD ripping, and that not every file in the mp3 format is pirated music that is going to have the RIAA sending FBI agents crashing through the door

Ahh, the joys of freedom.

I do miss free time, however. Don't miss boredom.

New chapter in the Terry's Roommate saga, and this time, I'm not just biting my tongue.

Two months ago, my brother/roommate's computer died (and I mean "died" literally -- it won't even start up anymore), presumably because all he did online was download. Naturally, this was the basis for my one and only house rule: he can't use my computer -- if it's necessary that he use the Internet, he can use a public network on campus like I do whenever I can't get a wireless signal.

Well, yesterday at around 10:00 pm, my computer shut down Windows on me with a virus warning. And imagine my surprise to experiment with logging on as a guest and finding a plethora of pornography in the recycling bin.

A System Restore appears to have fixed the problem -- it's not back to the way it was, but at least Windows hasn't shut down on me since the System Restore was executed. I'm going to back-up all of my WordPerfect files on disks so I know I won't lose them and run a few more virus scans just to make sure, but until I know exactly what happened, I'm cautioning all of you that you might hear from me a lot less in the future.

And as for my roommate... One thing is certain: I am not paying his half of the rent this month.

There are ways of deleting the guest account and password-protecting the logon; this will safeguard against further unauthorized use.

You should also be wary of spyware; if he's been looking at porn, you can almost count on it being there. Try a free spyware removal tool, like Spybot Search and Destroy.

I'll definitely check out that link when I get the chance Scott, but right now I don't have much of a choice. The Restore didn't fix the problem, and now it won't even start up properly.

And to top things off, I finally got a call back about one of the many job applications I've sent in over the past month -- they would like to interview me in person today at 5:00 p.m. Usually this would be a good thing, but the problem is that the job is in Ipswich, to which I am catching a train to in less than an hour. If I do get the job, it likely means I won't be returning to Bridgewater until Fall Semester starts in September, and since I can't get connected to a public service like the one I'm currently using on campus, unless by some miracle I can get my computer working again, that likely means you won't hear from me for at least a month, and unless I do get this job and enough hours to start adding back to my college fund, you might not hear from me even then.

Hopefully I'll be able to start posting again sooner, but just in case, you've been warned.

Did you use a credit card? If so, you can prove whether or not they charged you and there may be steps you can take to get either the money or the product.

If you used a money order and you kept the receipt, you can pay a few dollars and the post office may be able to track it down and see who cashed it (I had to do this once; it was relatively painless). However, I don't know if this is possible for international money orders.

Personally, I don't use checks, but I'm sure there are things you can do. Your bank may have some protections in place against theft that you could possibly take advantage of.

If you paid with cash... well... that was a bad idea. Now you know why. Don't do it again.

The very first thing I would do is e-mail them, explain the situation, and request that they send the product. If they refuse, I would respond with proof that they charged me and insist. If they ignore my e-mails, I would try to find a telephone number so I could talk to someone in person.

Unfortunately, they are in another country, and by most accounts $20 is too insignificant an amount to warrant any enforcement (unless you can show they're running some sort of scam). You're essentially, therefore, at the mercy of that company.

Well, I've been gone alot these past few weeks largely due to my job knocking me out for most of the day. However I suppose that won't be a problem in the short term anymore, cause due to a commumication error I've lost that job.

See, they changed the schedule on me and failed to inform me of this, so, instead of calling me up and asking me what happened they simply fired me.

Oh well, place had a horrible air to it anyway, I was going to get out of there soon anyway.

Back in Bridgewater for a while but still using public access, and things are, at the very least, looking a lot better than they did a week ago.

First and foremost, I haven't officially gotten the job yet, but so far things are looking pretty good. The interview went nicely, but I wasn't officially hired because she wanted to know my class times for the Fall semester and work around them, instead of my previous plan of only picking classes that didn't conflict with my work schedule. I was promised an official response by last Thursday, but didn't get one because (apparently) someone else working at the video store moved to North Carolina and forgot to give their two weeks notice, which really screwed up her planning chart.

As for the classes themselves, I was mercifully able to squeeze a full-time student course schedule into Tues-Wed-Thurs, leaving me four consecutive days to work, which means if I do have to work in a town eighty miles away from where I'm taking classes, I'll only have to take the train-subway-train trek twice a week. :D

I still haven't fixed my compy yet, but I'm positive I'll have it up and running some time next week. I managed to get in touch with my father, who does computer maintenance for small business networks for a living and as such deals with problems like mine on a day-to-day basis. He says he's more than happy to help, so we're going to be connecting in person (presumably for dinner and Revenge of the Sith) some time next week. :D

And best of all, our landlord is getting two checks for this month. Eight months later the jerk finally does his part.
