What game franchises that you love...

Post by Dreamer »

Is goign through a lot of sh*t right now.

You know the ones. Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, ect. The ones that you love, but have gone through a real downward spiral in recent years. Which ones are those for you?

For me, it's Donkey Kong. Ever since Rare left, Myamoto has been hard at work destroying their legacy, with his games like DK Jungle Beat eliminating everything Rare-made from the franchise except for the bananas.

None of the franchises i stick to are going downward, really...Legend of Zelda is going really well, and so is the Mario legacy...

Sorry to hear about Donkey Kong, Dreamer, I know how good Donkey Kong 64 is. Sonic is pretty good too, but you wont see me going out of my way to get a Sonic game.

Yeah, Sonic's gone down the crapper. So has poor Megaman, the cold, unfeeling robot killer that he is.

StarFox isn't terrible yet (I even liked Adventures), but it's not what it used to be. StarFox Command was a pretty good game, but it felt too different. I don't want all the levels to be in all range mode! It also brought about the terrible character design (look at the oddly proportioned head!) being used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. What was wrong with this? Okay, you're right, the problem is probably with the badly modeled ears and the weird fur on the face. Alright, then, why not clean it up? Or better yet, use this look (with the additional costume changes). That's probably the best that he's ever been designed. Rare did a damn good job on the Fox character model, even though most of the other models in the game were subpar.

Well, that went off track.

Why, what happened to Oddworld? I (unfortunately) never got into them, but there were only about four (Abe's Odyssee, Abe's Exoddus, Munch's Odyssee, and Stranger's Wrath) weren't there? Was Stranger's Wrath not as good as the previous games?

Sonic and Donkey Kong is the ones I use to worship the most, but after the dreamcast Sonic games just started sucking, and after Rare left Nintendo Donkey Kong hasnt been the same anymore.

As for Oddworld, yeah they have gone downhill, I have Exodus, and while its really funny and cool, but the fact that the game is so hard I could never truly get into it.

Final Fantasy.

FFX is still one of my favorite games of all time. FFXII made me want to kill somebody in real time. I don't know what dipshit thought it was a good idea to have attacks be in active time and spells be turn-based (I died a lot because the damn thing made me wait to cast heal spells while getting pounded on), but I hold all of Square responsible for being dumb enough to think it was a good idea too. Seriously, playing the game made me feel like some douche bag in Japan was simultaneously programming the game and jacking off thinking about how frustrated everyone would be as they played it.

And the storyline was horrible. The character development was. . . Wait, there was no character development! The game was either incredibly boring or incredibly frustrating (no excitement ever) and the story was too bland and boring for me to give enough of a s*** to tough it out and finish it.

Final Fantasy for me is the only franchise that went from absolutely awesome to absolute crap with just one game. A lot of franchises I quit on because they stopped being original (Mario, Donkey Kong, Sonic, Mega Man, etc. are all the same old story no matter what game in the series it is), but Final Fantasy is the only one that took an absolute nosedive in terms of quality instead of just becoming bland like the other mascot games did.

The multiplayer beta for Halo 3 was a big disapointment from what I heard. Unimpressive graphics thats on par with Perfect Dark Zero, and the multiplayer was exactly the same as Halo 2.

I rant constantly about my favorite game franchise. Steel Battalion. It's a series of mech simulator combat games for the XBox, and is only playable with the 40 button, two joystick, three pedal control system. I have two. Heh. ^_^

Image

Capcom published the game for the small developer named Nudemaker, and did a crap job of marketing it. It has to be the single most detailed simulator game ever to grace a console. The graphics during the time of its release were superb. All 20,000 units shipped worldwide were sold, thus hinting to Capcom that it might be a successful franchise. They then gave the OK on the sequel, Line of Contact. That game is twice as good as the last one, with more in-depth strategies, mechs, weapons... and ONLINE play.

The online Campaign servers allowed players to participate in a Risk style gameplay... occupying territory, earning money for mechs and parts, trading things with other pilots, detailed pilot battle stats, and a complex economy that even measured the rarity of buyable mechs. These Campaign servers ran for one and a half years... then Capcom shut it down because to them it was an unprofitable endevour. As if running a single tower server costs all that much for a big company like Capcom. Bastards. Now the online sequel Line of Contact only has Free Mission mode. A peer-to-peer connection through XBox-Live that lacks the stats and restrictions of Campaign that were many times more fun.

Will they make another Steel Battalion? Not a chance. Capcom broke even in sales with the game, dispite every single unit being sold within two months of release. It was a bad financial plan on their part, and now the fans have to suffer for it. Capcom also has had the habit of never selling their franchises, but we can only only hope that will change.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. Either...

1) Did I break it?
Yes. Twice my controllers have had some breaks. Just small fixable things like the sub-weapon trigger and a cracked button, and maybe one or two burned out LEDs. It took about six months of casual gameplay before the sub-weapon button's control chip got shoved out of place. All fixed though.

2) Did I break it in (debut playtime)?
I broke in my first controller in May of 2004, and the duel LAN setup in July of 2007. I've have about 1,500 combined hours of game time on record. It's just that fun.

Ontopic: The Doom-series went down since the old classic 1 and 2 (and 64 for that matter). Part 3 played and felt like a engine-demonstration stretched out into a full game, and the game got bored after just 3 levels, wich was a real bummer for me. The 'scares' in that game also didn't do much to me as a experienced horrorfan, and the boss-fight (and also the only Cyberdemon in the entire game!) was just lame (although the character design was obviously great). Ressurrection of Evil was a step into the right direction but quickly resembled in the same small corridors and limited space shooting. I also thought the game wasn't evil and gory enough. They could have easily made this game alot scarier by focussing more on disturbing images instead of flying objects that occur from time to time (ooohh scary!!!1).

No way! They look like something that could have been on a puppet-show or something. I thought they always looked that way.

I thought doom 3 was pretty cool. Of course, it would have been dissapointing for anyone hoping for a fast paced shooter. But yea, it wasn't really scary. Not to me anyway. But i did hear people scream through thier mikes when playing co-op on the xbox. Of course, i set them up for the traps n stuff ("hey! i found aplasma gun! You want it? its just inside this room...")

hmm... i suppose medal of honor. Heck, i didn't even bother playing the last two.

They were designed to be cartoony animals for children. The Star Fox characters were around long before the Furry fandom existed. Unless a character was designed with being a Furry in mind, I do not think of it as such. Well, the Furries can have Slippy... really... take him/her/it. LoL!

It's Slippy! The Movie!

But yeah, what the hell was wrong with them when they chose the voice actor for Slippy? And Tails, for that matter? Who they should have gotten was someone with a Michael J. Fox kinda voice, where it's young-sounding, but at the same time not whiny and screechy. Though to be fair, Star Fox 64, which started this nonsense with Slippy, at least had decent voice acting for most of the other characters (Slippy's wasn't even that bad, just annoying). Sonic voice acting has always been a**, as has every Star Fox game since 64.

Random unrelated fun fact: Fox is Irish.

Such realistic thought has no place in the Star Fox universe! Shame on you for thinking otherwise. After all, when you shoot Falco (sometimes accidentally, sometimes not), he yells at you "Hey, Einstein, I'm on your side!" Therefore, it is perfectly logical in the completely illogical Star Fox games that a character named Fox McCloud could, conceivably, be considered Irish.

Sidenote: Wolf O'Donnell is Irish, too.
