so how do you devolep characters for roleplaying, do you just you a generator or do you go into extensive research and writing to make your character as perfect as possible

as for my most used character what I did was I made him from basic concepts and let him form from there, I have been using him since I was 11 years old and I am very proud of the character, although I must admit that using him is starting to get a tad bland

I usually just make stuff up as I go along.

to make my characters, i just take attributes i posess and combine them with other ideas. my FAVORITE character, which i use on forums and in RP all the time, is based entirely on my personality/mental attributes. i also added an entirely different history that still fits his attitude and personality.
if i could give you any advice, it'd be to try to make a character from a part of yourself.

Taking attributes from yourself that you like and putting them into your character is the best, that's how i see it at least. It worked for me the person that knows the most about me is....well me. You don't have to rack your brain wondering how a crabby old person would react to a situation if you use the best of your personality.

Hmmm... Character development...

I see two approaches really...

The first is using your own attributes and personality. it is quicker and easier then other methods, but I have seen people who use that technique to get offended or hurt when an other player's character ridicules that character in-game, due to the strong link between player and player-modelled character. It's not common, but it happens.

The second manner - my favorite - takes a lot more work and effort. This is when you basically take a concept or background thing and build a wholly fictional character from start to stop in one go, tweaking edges and rough spots, but not really adding or substracting any parts later on.
Inventing stuff as you go -in my opinion- creates less believable characters since not all their "things" add up into a whole.
A fully pre-fleshed character is very rewarding to play and will eventually feel as natural as a pre-fitted glove when playing.

When characters "go bland" or lose their flair, i simply dump 'em. Nothing worse than trying to "spice up" a character. That's like adding new characters to a dying tv-show in hopes of saving ratings... it harms the original concept and eventually you end up with a mutant freak that is nothing like the character you created in that moment of inspiration.

This is just me... It might work for others and I think nothing less of people who do, please don't misunderstand. I just find it hard to play with/storytell for such individuals...

you know my character/altereo "Anubis" is apart of and is me. i know it sounds wierd but Anubis Garou and Andrew Paxman are the same person. so i don't like to throw my characters away because they become me and i become them. i just get too attached for some reason.

well that's me some people just come up with them and then thown them away when the creator get board with them.

but how i created "Anubis" is by making him the man that i want to be. by giving him the traits that i want and the traits i do have. Like Anubis is Coragous, strong, athletic, powerful, inteminating, belevolant, and valiant. while i'm a Wuss, weak, obiese, submissive, nice, and not much of a fighter. thats how i created him.

I hate throwing away characters, actually i never really do i set up a character retirement center in my brain so they won't feel abandoned and get revenge on me in my sleep  Sometimes they just don't seem to want to work and i put them aside to make an improved one. I may never talk about them again but they sure complain about the food there! Ol' farts :D

When I create a character I try to create one that is near to my personality or has at least features that I'm able to understand and to feel with.

It isn't hard for me to create a character that is the opposite of me or at least quite foreign from my point of view - but it is still hard for me to play such a character. I always fall back to behaviourisms that are more 'me'.

Also the longer I play a certain character the more familiar I'm with it the more harder it is for me to 'let it go'. I have to say that I feel sometimes the same way like Anubis about my characters - they become a part of me after a while. They tend to become strongly related to myself, because they are parts of me.

I sometimes envy people who can take a step backwards from their characters or play concepts that are foreign to them, but for me this is almost impossible ...

Alot of my characters have traits of mine, slightly tweaked to more beffit a RP character, IE, make them more heroic. As well, while one of my character might be bat-s*** insane enough to rush a stone golem crackling wtih electricity or something I'll be waaayyy over there --->

Alot of them I come off the top of my head with the two thought "What would be fun to play..." and "How wil this concept work in game". Then go from there, adjusting thing to suit the concept. Usually I start with something simple like "Assassin" or something. Then I go from there and see how they evolve. Though sometimes, I forget the 'fit in' aspect.

The longer you play one, the more complex they become, as they get exposed to more and more, you get to reveal more and more about them. Of course, I get more attached to a character as I play them. [/code]

I make mine up as I go, and I often develop them the more I play. I also 'write' in my head using the character while I'm elsewhere. I put a lot of effort into getting non-mary sues and gary stu characters haha!

Fang developed about a year ago. He's a mix of John Mclane, Wolverine and myself, just without my lame elements. Sometimes he's with NYPD sometimes LAPD, just your All-Around bada$$.

oie, thats sort of how I created Searif Bogard

he is the one I wanted to be, he is like my alter-ego but not so far from my own soul, he has my personality(aside from being much more serious then me) but his body is compleatly diffrent

although, you will hate me for this but he is a fallen angel/vampire
