I cant say I listen to black metal. It just never catches on to me. I like almost all other kinds of rock though.

Out of curiosity I looked up the ones I could find on You Tube.

I tend to like a little of almost anything, however, that goes beyond what I can like.

Black Metal is not for me.

Out of curiosity; how would you classify Nightwish? I rather enjoy them, even if they lost their fem. singer a while back and had to replace her.

Nightwish is nowhere close to black metal, or even metal.

Personally, I would classify Nightwish as crap. My opinion.

I like most metal, but overall I'm a black metal professional. Glad to see this thread pop up.

Randomly searching for black metal videos on YouTube probably won't result in anything useful for someone new to the genre. For any fan of heavy metal music uneducated in black metal, I'd have to say that starting from the historical beginning of the genre would be the best introduction.

Great starting points:

Venom - Welcome To Hell (1981)
Venom - Black Metal (1982)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa (1983)
Slayer - Show No Mercy (1983)
Possessed - Seven Churches
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Sodom - In The Sign of Evil
Bathory - The Return

I consider those albums to be some of the most accessible, since they're more akin to thrash metal and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal than some of the later, more dramatically evolved acts of the 90s. Sadly, someone only used to metal like Nightwish, Dragonforce, etc. might still be repelled by these recommendations, but it's kind of hard to get "softer" than these albums without venturing outside black metal altogether.

I dunno: I rather like the band Inkubus-Sukkubus, but their output is rather low.
In sad fact, most Black Metal bands seem to have-shall we say-sparse releases? I'd prefer at least one album/CD a year.

Sparse releases? They have 10 albums!

Btw nothing against them, but they aren't a metal band. ;) They're rock.

Are you serious? I know a lot of black metal bands that release almost more then 5 CD's per year or something...

Berserker: nice to see a fellow metalfan.

Personally I think symphonic black metal is a great way to get 'into' black metal for a lot of people. Bands like Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, and Limbonic Art are all a lot more melodic and accesible then most raw black metal bands (although I still love raw black metal).

Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, and Limbonic? I'll give them a listen.

I might be confusing Black Metal with something else...

Stormblast from Dimmu Borgir is a great album.

Prometheus - The Discipline of Fire & Demise from Emperor is very nice.

In Abhorrence Dementia from Limbonic Art is great.

Wahaha! Couldn't agree more dude! Had to be said. And same goes for After Forever

Haven't heard of Aborym, I definitely need to check that one out!
What are your thoughts on Burzum?

Burzum is great, and the only black metal act I know of that is actually soothing without loosing its black metal edge.

Aborym is a great industrial / black metal band.

Is anything by Cradle of Filth considered black metal?

No, I wouldn't consider anything by Cradle of Filth to be black metal. Black metal is as much about ideology as it is about aesthetic, and ideologically, Cradle of Filth don't fit the mold.

There are people who indeed classify Cradle of Filth as black metal, but most of the time it has to be said that those people usually don't really have full knowledge of black metal as a genre.

Venom is great thrash/black metal.
