Post by Vagrant »

First, some background information.

The Pack's IRC channel is the birthplace of inspiration quite often, and this instance is no exception. One day, we were all sharing links to music and we realised how much we all loved each other's taste in music, it was amazing. So amazing that outward was convinced she'd fallen through to a parallel reality where the improbable is likely, because things like this don't happen often.

The desired outcome of this thread.

The point of this thread is to recreate the conditions of the IRC channel that night, we can all share links to music that we like (I'll provide more information on this in a moment) and perhaps other people wiil like your taste in music, and they'll then end up cursing you as they try to seek out potentially obscure music CDs, but the positive side of this is that you'll have shared some awesome music. And that's great.

How do we go about this?

A good format would be something like this:

---
[Warning if the video includes mildly offensive things, but we should try to find those that don't... but if something does, put a disclaimer in there, that it's something people might want to avoid.]

Band - Track
http://youtube-link

Brief description.
---

That would make it easy for anyone who wishes to discuss something that's linked to just quote the band and track.

Really, it's freeform, so handle your entries however you like, this is your link exchange, as it is that of all the Pack, so it's not up to me how we do it, these are just guidelines which might help for an orderly listing.

Oh and if you want to link to some other host instead of YouTube, feel free, that was just an example too, if your favourite piece of music is hosted by someone else, then simply link to wherever!

All that said...

Have fun! May you find many kinds of music that interest you!

New information added on the 6th of January follows.

Howlitzer pointed something out to me that should be shared. For those of you who are using YouTube links, try adding &fmt=18 to the end of your links (see my post below containing Howlz' links for an example of this). Try the link to make sure it works, and if it does, keep the &fmt=18 there.

The reason for this is because having &fmt=18 on the end of the URL provides better stereo sound, and better sound in these videos can only be beneficial to this thread! So thanks to Howlz for that.

Well, these are all ones I listen to on a semi-regular basis.

Hideaway, by The Weepies. A rather mellow song.

The Last March of the Ents, from the LotR soundtrack. An excellent, haunting song, if rather short. It does more with a single minute than many songs can do with three.

Now we are free, a Hans Zimmer song from Gladiator. If this isn't one of the greatest soundtracks in the world, I dare you to find a better one.

Minstrel Boy, by the late Joe Strummer. From the Black Hawk Down soundtrack. Really, an excellent song.

Shaft, by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Just all around awesome. It is about Shaft(Samuel L. Jackson), so there is some profanity.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. An excellent reworking of Morricone's classic.

Speaking of which...The Good, The Bad, The Ugly live in concert.

Once upon a time in the west- Man with a harmonica. Haunting, and absolutely captivating.

The Ecstasy of Gold(live in concert), a particularly excellent piece from Ennio Morricone.

Fiddler on the green, by Demons and Wizards, set to scenes from Final Fantasy 8. Starts off pretty mellow, and then goes metal near the end.

Beneath These Waves, by Demons and Wizards, set to Warcraft scenes.

The Last Firstborn, by Celldweller and set to masterfully remixed scenes from Death Note.

Oh My Gosh, By Basement Jaxx. This is just too cool to leave out, this song will change your life.

Take me back to your house, by Basement Jaxx and featuring the singer from Dragonette.

Close your eyes, by Basement Jaxx ft. Linda Lewis.

Lastly, because I'm sure this list is getting excessive:
Soul Sloshing, by Venus Hum. The only real 'pop' type song on the list, but I like it.

Here's some more song links:

E.S. Posthumous -- Nara
http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=ee4070d0fd
This is the theme to Cold Case if anybody hasn't noticed. I'm not particularly fond of the show, but I do like this track.

Amon Tobin -- Bloodstone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G8n06ePgD0&fmt=18
I like this one a lot. If you do listen to it, listen to the WHOLE THING, as it takes a while to pick up.

Amon Tobin -- Verbal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7oS1bLqM84&fmt=18

Amon Tobin -- Foley Room
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LZWaMEFUR4&fmt=18
another weird one

Amon Tobin -- Deo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-cvlWtc9Q8&fmt=18

Cujo -- Cat People
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeYlzx662ps&fmt=18
Cujo is actually what Amon Tobin used to go by before his more recent stuff. It's a bit of a different sound, but you can kinda see the links.

Corvus Corax - Dulcissma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QWS1xUkUaA A spectacle to behold! One of the most elaborate medievalist groups ever to perform, famous for their theatrics. One of their more famous shows.

Dead Can Dance - Yulunga http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQvu0Xiw ... re=related Earthen spirituality put to music

Faun - Andro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKh4qWhm ... re=related Medieval dance with modern twist from Faun, my favorite Germanic folk band.

Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine (The Man Machine) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T65NpyfPkQ Uncommon live performance of one of Kraftwerk's most influential songs.

Korpiklaani - Hunting Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yM3XJZD ... re=related Rousing Finnish folk metal

Amon Amarth - Cry of the Black Birds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhptP8j-t-M I saw this band live, melodic Gothenburg death metal with Viking themes.

Summoning - Land of the Dead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lDcp_vD6HI From their newest album Oath Bound, Tolkien-influenced black metal and some of the most emotional in the genre. Simple fan-made video but the music is what's important.

Burzum - Dunkelheit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bm-kdLwBVc The secrets of the runes are in nature. Still my favorite song by one of the most controversial musicians of the 1990s. Just so trancelike and atmospheric.

Wolves in the Throne Room - Vastness and Sorrow live http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmsqvzxq ... re=related U.S. black metal, highly environmentalist ideology... I posted a thread about them on this forum.

Other than a majority of the music of the music already mulled over in our [fantastic] discussion, a large part of the music I listen to is classified under the genre "Post-Rock." I found a video on YouTube that is a compiliation of soundbites from some of the more popular bands. Although it may be a great 'intro,' I personally feel as though postrock is best listened to whole -- yes, the music is slow, but it will suck you in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9huXm5gpjSg

My favorite bands are Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Pelican, and A Northern chorus. I almost always listen to them while doing a quiet or contemplative activity -- such as drawing or reading. Most the music is pretty solemn, but Sigur Ros has created music that can be incredibly joyous, ambient, and melodic at the same time. Without a doubt, their most popular song appears to be "Hoppipolla" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EyI4p0yjDQ

(My one regret about the genre: The fans tend to be incredibly conceited. Bleh!)

Shadow: If you like Enigma, you might be interested in "Deep Forest" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvnVdMpgQOk

I thought this would be a bit of a rickety endeavour at first, but this thread seems to have really taken off, and its purpose at diversifying the tastes in music people may have, and introducing them to music we all like is being served well.

So on that note, I think I'll share something Midnight shared with me in the IRC, it's something you probably all know... but I'd never encountered the chap before, so without further ado, I give you a random bunch of Tom Lehrer!

Disclaimer: Lehrer can be very offensive, so if you're worried aout that, then don't follow the links!

Tom Lehrer is hilarious! Still funny after all of these years...

Back on topic. As I mentioned in my signature, I am a musical theatre geek. Therefore, most of the music I listen to is musical theatre. I'm interested in rock too, but I'll post my favorite songs for my favorite musicals. Because I'm geeky like that and stuff...

Anyway, here they are:

Jesus Christ Superstar: Gethsemane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDHoTOgeNWE&fmt=18)
Even if you're not a Christian, Jesus Christ Superstar is spectacular. It's a rock opera that started as a concept album (much like Tommy), but it helped the rock opera gain mainstream attention and a definitive place on Broadway and West End. This song is about Jesus asking God why he has to die, and it's just an awesome blowout, and Ted Neeley's voice is top notch. That high G gives me chills every time.

Sweeney Todd: A Little Priest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gyl8a140Tc&fmt=18)
This is not the movie, people. This is the GOOD version, starring George Hearn and the lovable Angela Lansbury. They play off each other so well, and this song is hilarious. It's about chopping up people into meat pies. Beware: lots of puns.

Jekyll and Hyde: Confrontation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HapZko5DIQA&fmt=18)
Anthony Warlow on the concept album of Jekyll and Hyde, and the best version of this song in my opinion. Jekyll and Hyde fight for control after Hyde murders a prostitute. Dark, eerie, and metaphorical.

I'm interested in a lot more musicals than that, but none that you guys would enjoy. :D Yes, I'm lame.
And everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

oook.

Since I think my music is the best (because I'm like that)... or music that I've worked on...

only two albums that I'm Really, Really happy with to this day to link to:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/louislamp - debut album, all original compositions
http://cdbaby.com/cd/sacredrite2 - Sacred Rite "Resurrcetion" (I'm just the guest with these guys)... if you like Avenge Sevenfold / Judas Priest... I HIGHLY recommend this album (and not just because I'm on it)

As for upcoming albums, I'm working on a sequel to my first album, helping write and record Dream Chemistry's first studio album, and god knows what else.
Everyday should be Towel Day.

Thanks for contributing, everyone! This thread is really thriving.

Just going to share one, myself, here...

---
Heavenly - Dust to Dust - Lust for Life
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpyJhkkMq3s

I'm not sure why, but I really dig this bit 'o music. There's just something about it, and I find it inspiring. If I'm feeling down, it's one of the things that'll usually help in cheering me up. I have no idea why, given the lyrics. But it's about how it makes me feel. I hope some of you enjoy it as much as i do!

The Great Collapse - Shadows Fall

I cant listen to this amazing acoustic interlude enough. the melody here is just insanely divine and beautiful. wow

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2jYuGT-LLU

Forevermore - Shadows Fall

This is the closing track from the same album as the song above "Threads Of Life" and is probably my favorite song on the album. the riffage here is what metal legends are made of and I think it may just be one of the coolest riffs Shadows Fall has probably ever written. just pure brilliance on all fronts!

Tragedy, by Celldweller. With scenes from the movie Mirrormask.
I really, really like this song. Most of his other stuff is more industrial, so it's a nice change of pace.

I'm falling in love with English concept albums. Here are the first parts of several concept albums/rock operas, and the rest of the parts should be easy to find on YouTube, or by looking up the song-lists on the Internet. These albums are best played in order from beginning to end.

Tommy, The Who
Quadrophenia, The Who
The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
The Wall, Pink Floyd
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie
Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), The Kinks

Here's the movie version of The Wall as well. Music comprises almost the entire movie, and I think it's too fantastic to leave out.
(This movie is rated R for violence, gore, brief profanity, sex, nudity, drug use, and highly disturbing and intense imagery/animation. You have been warned.)

I hope these bring back memories for some of our older members and generate interest in our younger ones.
