Commission Directory Idea

Post by takyoji »

I was just hit with the idea of where people can freely add a listing to a directory for asking of commissions. It could also be an additional profile field as well. Any ideas or desires by anyone?

I like this, it seems more elegant than the way it's currently done, with separate threads that have no more connection to a user's profile than anything else. This would provide a quick and easy way to see if someone takes commissions, and maybe even what commissions they have previously done.

We have a slightly different idea in mind... but at the same time, doing something within a forum might be great place to start such a directory. The only difficulty I see with the forum, is that having a dynamic directory might be best, rather than one that someone needs to manage the first page of the directory by hand, so to speak.

It will be purely dynamic. I intend on having it where people can specify the rates (or general ranges of rates) for commissions, such as by hour, by medium, etc. Or whatever means they have. So people could find people interested in doing a traditional art commission, or some type of artisan craft like necklace or fursuit, or whatever. And as implied, I'd have a search function for it, so it would be easy to use. Not even deviantART or FurAffinity (which still has their page down since nobody's finished Ferrox yet, or even worked on it for that matter. xP) have this type of functionality; of course a person could just have it in a journal/profile on any service, but it isn't easily searchable/indexable that way.

On Werewolves at Heart we just have a section on the main page for those who are offering commissions. If they want to show up there, they just have to send a note to the group. After that, their icon and a link to their commission information is added. So far so good.

Something I've learned from that is it would be nice to have commissioner information automatically expire after a certain time. In a forum setting for example, maybe the post automatically gets deleted after being there for 3 months without comments. Maybe an email notification could be sent out 72 hours before it gets deleted in case the artist is still in fact offering commissions.

I also like the idea of commissions being a profile field (or a Y/N drop down box with another field with a link to commission information anyway). Possibly a little button or "pin" would show up near the user's avatar when the box has the value "Y" selected. I duno. Just brain-dumping here.
