man, i thought i was bad. look, how else are we going to keep out spammers that keep putting porn here, and how are we keep fans of the Freeborn movie from crowding us out. If you got a better idea, i'm all ears, and we are only throwing ideas around
besides I doubt that the host of this forum would support it.

I highly discourage the idea of making it difficult for normal people to join the pack.
I'm all for blocking out bots (automated programs that randomly register to any forums they can find and post advertisements poorly diguised as genuine messages) but making people answer a questionaire, or write an essay to proove thier worthiness? ?
...the hell?...
Most of us would not be here if those requirements had existed since the beginning. ...including me.
Who would want to join an Elitist BS group like that?
If that is the future of the Pack...I don't want to be a part of it.
"THE PACK" should allways be open to Everyone...as it allways has been.
Sure...after Freeborn hit's theaters, there will enevitably be an influx of people comming in to see what we are all about, (even if most of them end up at the "Freeborn" forums instead), and there are undoubtably going to be a few Jerks, and ***holes among them, but that's just life.
If we turn away the "Casual Fans" and the Lurkers and the rest, we will loose a great many potential friends.
We were all noobs once. I just don't understand how we could just turn around and say that no-one else can join, post and just hang around and have fun here the way the rest of us do. ...but force them to proove they meet our "standards" first... How the Hell can you judge a human being like that anyway?
Forget the entrance exam...just let the spammers come. We will carry on. It will get crazy for a while, and it will drive us nuts, but sooner or later, most of the spammers will move on to haunt other mesage boards, and the ones that stay in spite of the chaos might just turn out to be some of the coolest members we have.
Think about it... Would Matt Sullivan be here, sharing all his great ideas and artwork and info on his own upcomming film had he run into that much trouble just to earn the right to post and say "Hi" ?
...who knows what kinds of interesting people we might loose if we implemented a system like this.
I say "Nay" to selective membership.

Anyone can join this forum if they want.
And THATS final!! No if ands or buts!!
In case you didn't notice....we have a Camp Lycanthrope and Hour of Darkness section. People could join just for that.
As for the spam bots, I'm trying the best I can to delete the account after they join. I'm noticing at least 5-6 bots join this forum everyday.

For about 2 or 3 months after the movie gets released, this would be a problem for sure. If the movie is quite popular, perhaps millions of fans would be trying to overwhelm this board for about a year, but in any case the worst of it would be 2 to 3 months afterwards.Anubis wrote:Agreed,Shadow Wulf wrote:Thats good, the last thing we need is a bunch of people joining and randomly saying how the movie is soo awsome or the movied sucked. Or a bunch of other spammers.
NOTE: If there is gonna be a freeborn forums, please dont post any links to here.
If no one posts a link to this site, then we wont get over run by possers, n00bs, and the fanatic that has little or no life to speak of. They will eventualy push regulars like us out of the forum, with the flood of "What did you think of freeborn thread" clones, chat speak, and all around n00bish behavior that drives us NUTS! not to mention the volume of people that could flock here.
But sooner or later some n00bish fan, or freeborn forum Admin/Moderator will find us and THEY will link to us then it's good bye pack and hello n00bie island.
One solution would be to have an automated bot or other process on Anthony's Freeborn board that quickly removed any links to here.
Another solution would be to make the registration process temporarily more difficult, such as having a one-week waiting period during which you have to respond to two confirmation emails. Generally, the kind of newbies who are destructive to message boards have very little patience. Another method is to have a small clause hidden somewhere deep within the agreement you have to click "yes" to in order to register, and tell new people that there is such a clause and it's their responsibility to look for it and do what it says or their account won't register. People without the patience to comb through the agreement will automatically get excluded from the board.

YES! I completely agree with this. We are not the illuminati we don't need to select are members carefully, the moderators just have to be on gaurd for spam bots.Vuldari wrote:I highly discourage the idea of making it difficult for normal people to join the pack.

Im not saying we should put restrictions, Im not in fdor that. I just want to keep the packs profile low somewhat when the movie comes out. I dont really want a whole wave of people just going straight to this site and spamming and make this nice small community into a less friendly place. All I am suggesting as that no one tries to post any links to here at the freeborn forum. People who loves furries or anthros or werewolves that finds things like our site will join. And I know that some other forums post a link to here but most of them dont even come here cause they like their forums or they are not interested.Fenrir wrote:How can you people want this, SW and Anubis, Iam ashamed you should know better THE PACK isn't an exclusive club for those priviged few, like those big buisnesses you hate Anubis. The one thing I am afraid of is several people coming in here after watching the movie. And says "OMG I LOVE THE MOVIE AND I LOVE THE WAY YOU ALL THINK!! CAN I HELP IN THE NEXT MOVIE!! And then theres the other people that might be complete asses and make this forum unwelcome. I know they are still gonna come and I have faith in the pack that we wont let this happen. If someone starts being asses from the beggining, it should result in an immediate banned, the mods in here has been a bit soft and once alot of people comes then they are gonna have to get a little tougher for consequences.
Ofcourse this is only if theres alot of people coming in. But I am not supporting about some kind of filter or anything. Im with you and vuldari. Ok?

You know we could ask AB to not give us any credit and deny any involvement we had in the movie. I know you may not like that, but in order to keep the forum from being over run by hyperactive fans that always have their caps lock on, besides filtering sign ups. We may have to do that.
I rather have a small forum where it's like family, than credit on a movie, no matter how cool it is.

Well, its an interesting conundrum..
However, the Freeborn movie, will have its 'own' movie forum.. 'the pack' will still exist.. most folks who want to just 'spam' their adoration for me or the film (subtle ego stroke) ;) Can do that on the movie forums.. and most likely wont show much interest in the 'true pack mentality' .. those that 'do' I personally will welcome with open paws. er, arms.

WHAT?!
---------------------------------------------------
It's cool and all that our little group here has developed some great friendships and unique traditions, but for goodness sake you are talking about ABANDONING the very cause and purpose this group was originally Founded for!...
...it's true that we have begun to grow beyond the film "Freeborn" and have become an entity all our own, but "Freeborn" is the very reason why every single one of us came to meet at this place to begin with. We collectively have devoted untold hours of our lives dedicated to the discussion of how to make werewolf movies better, and now as the proof that our time and efforts and passions have not all been spent in vain grows slowly but steadily nearer, you wish to close yourself up, hide in a corner and pretend we DON'T EXIST?!...
The Finger(Paw)-Prints of the entire PACK are all over this whole project, from concept to financing to pre-production, soundtrack, SFX and beyond...
It is a special favor from Anthony that he has promised to mention our name in the opening credits of the film. He didn't have to do that.
But...there is not a snowballs chance in HELL that I'm going to stand for you, Anthony, or ANYONE...
and DENY any involvement we had in the movie.
...flat out DENY that any of us ever had anything to do with it.
"Freeborn" is the birthplace of "THE PACK" ... 'Denying' involvement in the film would be like...Disowning your Parents.
...and you call yourself a part of the "Family"...
THE PACK is the proverbial lovechild of Anthony's ambition to create the "Ultimate Werewolf" Movie, and the unique imagination and creativity of all of those who have become a part of it. If our dreams are the Mother of THE PACK, then "Freeborn" is it's Father.
Like it or not, this 'Family' is going to get bigger. You are just going to have to get used to sharing a smaler portion of the spotlight.
...you can not deny our Destiny.
Success or Failure, we stand with Anthony and "Freeborn" till the very end, and beyond.
END OF STORY

We do need to have some ideas, even if we never implement them, about what to do if the couple of months after the movie is released lands half a million people on our little message board. There's no harm in throwing some volume management ideas out there for consideration. Bad or unpopular ideas will die on their own, anyway.Anubis wrote:Chill out!

Obviously, some ideas of how to temporarily cut down on the volume of new visitors would be too extreme, and others might work but anger folks here, which makes them unviable.
But there could always be some good ideas that come from this process, and we might need those ideas waiting in the wings if Freeborn fulfills our dreams and becomes a wildly popular film.

Anubis, your idea expresses your concern most of all.. I dont look at the idea as a 'legitimate option'.. yet, still it does show your desire and commitment to wanting to keep things 'personal'.. that I applaud.
Vuldari I have grown to have a good deal of respect for over time.. His attention to detail, and his die hard tenacity can be hard to swallow at first.. yet, Vuldari has a wonderful sense of humor I've found as well.
Don't take his rant personally.. The man expresses his feelings, and doesn't hold back.. it can be annoying to some at times.. but his heart is in the right place, and I wouldn't have him any other way. Most of us mince words a good deal of the time.. We gotta have someone that doesn't around here to help balance things out.
All the ideas are important, because while any 'one' of them might not work.. they coudl spawn off 'new' ideas that could..
I'm not a fan of restricting access.. however, if the 'salivating fans' want to keep their capslock on to say how cool the movie is.. they can do it on the movie forum..not the pack site.. So.. how do we achieve this..
One suggestion is to embed the pack site 'after' a splash screen.. informing those that enter, of what this place IS.. and what it is not.. I would venture to say a vast majority of postings would come from those that just wanna talk about the film.. if they're told up front that this 'isn't the place for that.. many should go to where its more fun to do so.
keep em coming..

A simple "I Disagree" would not have even come CLOSE to conveying how I feel about the subject.Anubis wrote:...and Vuldari you only had to say that you don't agree with me, and not go on a friggen rampage with your mouth foaming
Fine...
...I Disagree with the notion that the Pack should stay the same and not change.
Every time a new member joins our group, this place changed. It has been changing every day since November 2004. There are minor frustrations every time a "noob" hops on the train and doesn't know how we like to do things around here, but in time, if they like what they find, they learn how to get along and before you know it, you can't imagine this place without that person any more.
As this group get's bigger, new challenges arise that we may not have had to worry about before, but overall, I feel this place has just been getting better and better the more new voices I hear. ...new ideas...and sometimes just the courage to revive old ones that we had given up on prematurely.
What are you so afraid of anyway? What disasterous thing is going to happen if 3,046 new people who loved Freeborn become regulars here the day after the "Freeborn" premiere?
Those who are not welcome will be asked to leave...those who post objectionable content will be informed better of our groups rules and standards of integrity and will be dealt with accordingly.
Once the dust clears and the fires have been put out, this "Family" could emerge as a true "Community", and all of us will be able to feel duely proud to have helped build it into the fantastic Community that it will be tomorrow.
Who knows...perhaps if we stay true to the values of friendship, openmindedness and cooperation that have held this group together so strongly so far, we could become an example for the web-communities of the world for what a Web Community can REALLY be.
With just the modest membership we have now, we're allready shaping up to have not one, but THREE film's to our credit which may not have ever been otherwise.
Just imagine what "The Pack" could be capable of ...if...
...with enough enthusiastic members, we could rent out an entire convention hall and hold the first ever "National PACK-CON" in 2009.
...we could organise massive fund drives for things we all care about that REALLY make a difference.
...we could collect a pool of enough talnt and experience from just our own members alone to imagine, create, fund and produce "Pack ProductionsTM" Films, Comic Books, Novels and Videogames about Werewolves, Dragons, Other Were-Creatures and whatever the hell we want Ourselves.
...Now wouldn't THAT be something...
I would love to see that happen someday. ...and to be able to look back on it and say, "We Did That".
That seems MUCH cooler to me than restricting this place to never becoming anything more than a private message board of people who are afraid of being noticed by the outside (Real) world.
I believe it has been the collective will of all of us to accomplish a mutual goal that has held us together so well... and so I think we will need to keep our eyes on the next goal after Freeborn for that unity to survive and not just fade away once that film has been completed, whether it be the sequel to "Camp Lycanthrope", or somthing completely NEW...

I agree that a system should be set in place that makes it perfectly clear what the difference between the "Freeborn" Fan Forums, and "THE PACK" are, and how to get to each of them. ...if only to make sure everyone ends up where they intended to go, and we don't drown in "ALL CAPS" messages more than is neccesary.
However, I still feel that, if ANY of the folks that are drawn in by the film feel like they would like to be a part of "THE PACK" too, I say...leave the door wide open and let the curious wander right in like they have allways been able to do.
...though a bright and colorful, attention grabbing link dirrecting fans to the "FREEBORN" forums on the PACK's front splash page would Still probobly be a good idea.
(...and I'm really sorry for being so "annoying" sometimes...)
