Pet Food Recall

Post by PariahPoet »

Ok, this is scary- lotsa canned and pouch pet food contaminated with rat poison. :(

I feed my kitty Special Kitty dry food, and Special Kitty canned food was on the list. It's making me really nervous.

Here is the list of cat food-

and here is the list of dog food-

Thank God Purina isn't on that list. I sure hope eveyone in The Pack was lucky enough to have steered clear of this catacstrophe.

The contamination came from a shipment of wheat from China.

PariahPoet - I've seen a lot of talk about this from friends on places I visit on the internet (Live Journal etc.) and all the comment seems to be that dry pet food isn't affected. But if your kitty is showing any signs of being out of sorts, then it would be best to take him/her to the vet for a checkup... If nothing else it will save you a lot of worry.

Yeah, I gave Bruce a can of food a few days ago, but thank Heaven it was Fancy Feast because he doesn't like the others. Other than that he's just had dry and seems to be fine, but man that's just scary, because I've given him some of the other kinds before.

It has been all over the news for a while, and I'm sure most evryone knows about it, but I thought it wise to post anyway just to be sure.

Poor critters that ate the stuff... :( It's just heartbreaking. You try to take good care of your animal companions, and then you get thrown a wild card like this....

Thank you so much for those links Pariah. When I heard the news, I got nervous. I was worried that my two dogs were eating contaminated dog food. The food they eat isn't on the list (hopefully) and they're in good health and acting like their normal selves. Hopefully, this catastrophy will end and our pets will be in good health and safe.

Stay away from any wet food. If you give your cat or dog dry kibble or cat food, you should be safe. It's mainly the meat cuts and small pouches filled with wet food that's the worry.

The poisoned food has all been taken off the shelves in most major grocery outlets. You can go back to buying dog/cat food. Just keep an eye out for news of bad ingrediants in food. These things can happen in human foods too.

Well, I just called my parents. Apparently our black lab Elijah got some of it. :(
I remember about a week ago when we got back from vacation he was feeling bad, and our bloodhound Jasper kept laying right beside him and worrying at him, sniffing his back around his kidneys. Aparently Jasper could smell that there was something wrong.
But Elijah seems to have recovered, so that was a really close call. :(

I'm glad that Elijah is ok. You have any pics of him?

Whatever Chinese company that produced that poisoned crop is definately going to go out of business, and for good reason.

Absolutely... I can remember there being a couple of international scandals (big enough to make the news on this side of the world) about poisoned food. The big one that got people really worried was inadequately processed tinned fish contaminated with (I think) Botulism. (That was the point of the "Tinned salmon!" punch line of one sketch from "Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life")

PariahPoet - good news that Elijah has recovered.

Hey is this only America?

Eh lucky I think all our food is made here in Australia! None imported, I dont think I usually buy imports anyway.

Thanks for the warning Pariah. May have saved a lot of lives!

Always glad I don't eat meat because it can really be bad for you if it's from the wrong place. But we've had recalled vegetables and recalled frozen foods and everything. I remember when we had a bad batch of prunes and alphalpha sprouts!! (However that is spelt).

From what I've heard on the news, canned food is the only thing that seems to be contaminated.

I feed my cat dry food as well so, I don't have anything to worry about. :D

I had some of the bad food here- (Priority) and my cats wouldn't eat it.
The Market pulled it all and I got my money back, and I never use cheap dry food (don't save that much, really).
The most current thought is that it was contaminated Grain from China that was the source of the poison. Apparently they use it as rat poison, and it got into the stuff sent here.

Hey! If your dog or cat won't eat their dinner, but is still hungry; maybe they are trying to tell you something...

Thanks for the link Pariah I was just telling a friend about it, but didn't what to tell them as far as brands except for Laura Lynn, Walmart, Winn Dixie and Publix which where the only ones I knew of. Thanks again, luckily I don't have any pets here, but I have 26 cats back home and if even a one of them died I don't think I would be able to handle it :(

Yeah I heard about this. Jeesh it seems like these things are happening more frequently than normal.

I don't think that the rate of food poisonings has actually changed - it's the fact that everyone is much better connected - so that whenever it happens, everybody knows about it.

I have been hearing about this nonstop considering I work in a pet store. We've had a couple of people with sick or dead pets. And my god, its such a HUGE responsibility for my boss. She has to find out every single affected food and get it off the shelves. Ive just been recommending people to switch to safe brands.

You did hear it was RAT POISON right? Someone did this on purpose. People are theorizing it's a test run by terroists for an attack on the human food supply. Wouldn't surprise me if it was.

I heard about the problem on the news quite some time ago, and yet, I still didn't bother to check the list of foods that were involved, until now... :(

Luckily, none of the foods I got for my pets were on that list, or else it probably would have been too late.

Oi - Matt, anything that goes wrong these days can be something for the Dept. of Homeland Scrutiny to look into because of those terrorists... :p
