Heh, yeah, I watched another theremin video (it was a version of Video Killed the Radio Star) where the performer mentioned Good Vibrations. I've never heard of the Muttonbirds, but I do remember hearing a different version of Don't Fear the Reaper at the end of The Frighteners (awesome movie directed by Peter Jackson and starring Michael J. Fox, for those who don't know). Don't remember much about it, but I should check it out again.
EDIT: Oh, yeah. Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

The Mockers - "Seven Years Not Wasted".
The Muttonbirds came fairly close to hitting the big time but didn't quite make it... they sold quite a few CDs in Britain and for some reason an obscure American band once named itself after one of their songs. Had some rather big hits over here (at least one #1 hit - "The Heater" - back in 1993 or 1994). The lineup which recorded "Don't Fear the Reaper" were:
Ross Burge - drums.
Don McGlashan - voice, guitars, euphonium.
Alan Gregg - bass, backing vocals.
David Long - lead guitars, backing vocals, theremin.
The song's on their greatest hits CD "Flock" and there's probably a "Frighteners" soundtrack CD with it on, as well.

Thanks for the information. I still need to check out the song... I'll do that next.

A reel-to-reel demo posted by Optiganally Yours' Pea Hix on WFMU's 365 Days Project of a unknown band from the early 70's that is woefully misaccredited to Billy Joel.
Nice stuff too.
