Don't know for sure, but I think its real. Birds can have there feathers puffed out, all relaxed one second. Then, if they get excited or scared they'll stand up straight with their feathers flat against there bodies. My bird will do that, though it doesn't look THAT extreme.

It's a defence mechanism to make it look bigger, and more predetorial, sorta like a cat. I can't read much of the Kanji, so I don't know really what it is saying.

I have to agree with Silverclaw, my birds tend to puff out their feathers or suck them in. One minute they're fat and the next they're skinny.
