See-through frogs

Post by JoshuaMadoc »

Well, i dunno how you guys are gonna react to this (if i'm right, one of you will remark that these buggers should die rather than be freaks), since you're all so touchy about animals, but scientists in japan have unveiled a see-through frog.

It's still primitive, but they've predicted that by perfecting this technique, they will be able to finally look at the insides of animals without having hippies clinging on their legs, pleading for their lives.

Waste of science. Why not experiment something useful, like mutated monster similar to the ones in Resident Evil.

Well, what about the plasmids like in Bioshock? I actually heard about viral genetic therapy, which sounds similar to plasmids. I want a werewolf based one, or at least as claose as possible (Staying in a gestalt-type appearance all the time wouldn't be that bad)

My guess is that they're experimenting with genetics, just testing out different things to try and get a result. Once they get the hang of that they'll probably move on to something useful.

Is there a point to having see-through frogs? No.
Is there a point to learning how to make see-through frogs? Maybe.

Kinda like typing exercises. There's no reason to ever type ffff jjjj ffff jjjj in any other situation, but it will build up to something useful later on. Hopefully.

EDIT:
Sumida said researchers could also inject into the transparent frogs an illuminating protein attached to a gene, which would light up the gene once it manifests -- for example, showing at what stage cancer starts.
Right there's what I'm talking about. They say that that in particular is not possible with mammals, but it could potentially lead to other possibilities.

Yeah, I work in a pet store and we have one or two fish that you can see completely through. Some kind of tetras (blood fin?). Its pretty cool.

I predict those same hippies will shift gears to whine about how wrong it is engineer the frogs to have see-through skin or something.

In any case, they don't look so transparent, and I'm no expert on frogs, but wouldn't the muscle tissue get in the way of seeing organs? Or is that transparent too?

Yep, it's the 'illuminating frogs' part that disturbs me.

See this:
The Frog article thing wrote:"You can see through the skin how organs grow, how cancer starts and develops," said the lead researcher Masayuki Sumida, professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology of state-run Hiroshima University.
In short: It's part of the cancer-research.

But just imagine the outcry and the moral issues invlolved. Also, who would want to be see through? This is why animals are good to test on. They don't care.

I don't see the point in using animals for researching human problems anyway. A frog, pig, rat, monkey, etc. ISN'T a human. Things are going to affect them differently. If you're doing research on humans...then use some damn humans!
