Eh, nothing says that being in a pack could be your job. The entire business, or organization could all be werewolves, or at least members of the pack.
I'm sure we've all seen people like that, who never do anything, but still have their job.

Re: Best job for a werewolf?
Just thought of another one that applies to many of my characters- unskilled laborers. If you happen to be relatively uneducated but are much stronger than the average human it would probably be a very easy and simple job to keep. Might also be a good way to lay low if you are trying to hide for some reason.

As mentioned before, a werewolf can excel at hunting if he can get a pretty penny. A few might be outright poachers as well.

I'd say law enforcement. It might actually help them reduce crime rate and hunt down criminals trying to escape

I like that... Let's see... Butcher's been said, hunter, trapper... has Fire Fighter been mentioned?Thunderclaw wrote:I'd say law enforcement. It might actually help them reduce crime rate and hunt down criminals trying to escape
Edit: Yeah, wingman mentioned it. One of my characters can control fire, so he starts off as a firefighter, but then moves to being a detective later on. Why? The first one was because he could make fire work for him instead of against him. The latter... because he discovers he's very intelligent and can hold down that job. Given, he also has issues with his family {wife two kids} because of these jobs, but he does love them...

Re: Best job for a werewolf?
Believe it or not, I'm going to agree with this. Gardening and/or farming might be right up a werewolf's alley.kitetsu wrote:This is a notion I have to absolutely object towards. Just because you get to be Rambo on crack and being Rambo on crack "should" be the rage, that doesn't mean being a gardener prohibits you from having an imagination and wield serrated twisted metal salads you call gardening tools. Being a gardener also means that you're able to grow vegetables and fruit -- and wolves have to eat, even if they insist on meat just for the sake of being wolf-ish.
1) It's a job they can do at home. Professional gardeners can save up and invest in their own greenhouse while beginners can work out of their garage or their back yard.
2) If their garden is big enough (IE: farmers), that will give them a lot of land which will (ideally) afford them a lot of privacy at night during prime shifting hours.
3) Their heightened sense of smell might make it easier for them to determine if something is ripe, diseased, infested, etc.
4) Regeneration = Extra endurance for those long hours.
5) Lots of digging involved (and who can dig better than a canine?).
The only other jobs I could think of that a werewolf might consider would be ones where they wouldn't be adept at it so much as they would benefit from the isolation it commonly involves. Like a lighthouse keeper, for example.

Re: Best job for a werewolf?
I personally don't think that most werewolves would be the type to go in for a job that involves having a career. If a hypothetical werewolf were to become a law enforcement officer, it would be very difficult, if a hunter or other inconvenient human got on his trail, to just pack up and move out. He would have to resign his commission so that he could leave in a way that wouldn't have him marked as a missing person and searched for by the police, because if he simply transferred to another division or whatever, there would be records of that and he wouldn't be difficult to trace. Same problem with most governmental, law enforcement, medical, scientific, and search-and-rescue type jobs.
As for hunting, he'd be cut out perfectly for that, but I could also see a lot of werewolf hunters doing some more normal hunting on the side, and there's always the possibility that the two might run into each other.
Professional athletes are always in the spotlight, and I doubt that a werewolf would want to attract that much attention. I could, however, see a werewolf becoming a strongman or trapeze artist or similar, employed by a traveling circus that wasn't too famous.
I would expect most werewolves to be things such as shopkeepers, salespeople for Walmart, Starbucks employees, waitresses, trash collectors, or other jobs that don't require extensive documentation and can be quickly quit if need be. Or perhaps things like computer programing and web design that can be done from home and thus are easily movable. I can also see werewolves as preferring the night shift where possible, to avoid unnecessary contact with lots of people, and because I've heard that most wolves are primarily nocturnal (not sure that's true though).

That assumes, however, that the reaction to getting someone on their trail is to flee. Most people couldn't sustain themselves like that - moving around a lot isn't cheap. It also assumes someone who is a police officer (or something else) or such is going to take being (what amounts to) stalked lying down. There's a ton of legal means of dealing with the the would-be hunter (or nosy bastard).Ember wrote:I personally don't think that most werewolves would be the type to go in for a job that involves having a career. Suddenly packing up and leaving is not only expensive, but it looks guilty as hell. Most people would stand their ground. If the pursuit had any doubts, fleeing with remove them entirely. Sticking where they are can reinforce doubts in the hunter's minds, especially if coupled with legal pressure.
And when all else fails, well, them claws ain't for show.

Re: Best job for a werewolf?
Something else you might want to take into account is that most circuses are generational; the present day performers are often the offspring of former performers.Ember wrote:I could, however, see a werewolf becoming a strongman or trapeze artist or similar, employed by a traveling circus that wasn't too famous.
Unfortunately, this could be both a pro and a con for a werewolf. On one hand, circuses are generally pretty tight-knit families and often have plenty of secrets to go around (you can bet a lot of those first-generation circus clowns are running away from something).
On the other hand, these so-called "circus royalty" performers can be about as xenophobic and anal as you get. So a circus would be a good place for a werewolf to work if he was already in the family, actually getting into the circus and staying there long enough to be treated like family would be hell.
If that was the kind of work a werewolf was interested in pursuing, he might have more luck at a casino or theme park. The performers can be just as varied and enjoy the same kind of relative anonymity, but they could also enjoy the privacy and security of a more standard 9-to-5 job. Or at the very least, he wouldn't need to live out of a small trailer along with a few dozen other performers that could very well be plotting his demise.

A doctor. Not the kind who works in the ER, but the sort who tries to diagnose people with diseases. In my vision of werewolves, they retain their heightened senses while in human form, so a werewolf doctor would probably be able to "smell" which disease a person has, and thus give accurate diagnoses (plus throw in some tests to make it look like they're a normal doctor).

Re: Best job for a werewolf?
I guess you have a point there. But don't you need proof that someone's after you before the police can really do anything about it? A sneaky hunter might be able to stalk a werewolf without being noticed, but of course in that case the werewolf wouldn't know either so being ready to run wouldn't do any good.Aki wrote:That assumes, however, that the reaction to getting someone on their trail is to flee. But now I think about it, you're right about most people standing their ground. Besides looking guilty, I now doubt that many werewolves would relish the idea of being run out of town without a fight by a puny human.
A casino sounds good. But I could see some werewolf families being in circuses for generations, or perhaps even starting their own. That way they could employ only humans who they know are on their side for help with blending in. Perhaps there could be circuses made up entirely of "hidden people", werewolves, vampires, etc. Like Cirque du Freak.Terastas wrote:Something else you might want to take into account is that most circuses are generational; the present day performers are often the offspring of former performers.Ember wrote:I could, however, see a werewolf becoming a strongman or trapeze artist or similar, employed by a traveling circus that wasn't too famous.
