Obligatory recommended music topic

Post by Scott Gardener »

Here's a topic that's sure to get big pretty quickly--the list of recommended werewolf music.

First, the essentials.

Metallica "Of Wolf and Man," Type O Negative "Wolf Moon," Danzig "Killer Wolf," Misfits "Halloween II," Warran Zevon you-know-the-one.

There.

I decided to start this topic, first, because it hasn't already been started (forgive me if I missed finding it elsewhere), and second, because I've been listening to The Cure a lot recently, and I've been amazed at how many songs can be read to apply to werewolves, even if they're not officially lupine-themed. I'll let you be the judge, and post the lyrics of some of the more fitting ones:

A Night Like This (The Head On the Door, 1984)

Say goodbye on a night like this
If it's the last thing we ever do
You never looked as lost as this
Sometimes it doesn't even look like you
It goes dark
It goes darker still
Please stay
But I watch you like I'm made of stone
As you walk away

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
A witch hunt for another girl
For always and ever is always for you
Your trust
The most gorgeously stupid thing I ever cut in the world

Say hello on a day like today
Say it everytime you move
The way that you look at me now
Makes me wish I was you
It goes deep
It goes deeper still
This touch
And the smile and the shake of your head

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
Can't stand here like this anymore
For always and ever is always for you
I want it to be perfect
Like before
I want to change it all

I want to change

I heard rumor that a cover of this song was on the Ginger Snaps soundtrack, but I did not hear it or find it in the credits. None-the-less, it's chorus about wanting to change could be interpreted as a double meaning. The next song on the same album is far less ambiguous.

Screw (The Head On the Door, 1984)

When you screw up your eyes
When you screw up your face
When you throw out your arms
And keep changing your shape
Taste the taste in your mouth
Taste the taste on your tongue
On the film on your eyes of what I've become

What do I do when you screw up your eyes?
What do I do when you screw up your face?
What do I do
When you throw out your arms
Fall on the floor
And keep changing your shape?
Jump right into your mouth?
Jump around on your tongue?

And the film on your eyes of the way I've become
Makes me sick at the way that I try
Anything in the world
To impress that I'm doing this
Only for you

Open (Wish, 1992)

(excerpt...)

...and i'm starting to laugh
like an animal in pain
and i've got blood on my hands
and i've got hands in my brain
and the first short retch
leaves me gasping for more
and i stagger over screaming
on my way to the floor
and i'm back on my back
with the lights and the lies in my eyes
and the colour and the music's too loud
and my head's all the wrong size
so here i go
here i go again...

yeah i laugh and i jump
and i sing and i laugh
and i dance and i laugh
and i laugh and i laugh
and i can't seem to think
where this is
who i am
why i'm keeping this going
keep pouring it out
keep pouring it down
and the way the rain comes down hard
that's the way i feel inside...

All I Want (Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, 1987)

Tonight I'm feeling like an animal
Tonight I'm howling inside
Tonight I'm feeling like an animal
Tonight I'm going wild

And all I want is to be with you again
And all I want is to hold you like a dog
And all I want is to be with you again
With you again
Just to hold you like a dog

Tonight I'm screaming like an animal
Tonight I'm losing control
Tonight I'm screaming like an animal
Tonight oh I'm getting so low

And all I want is to be with you again
And all I want is to hold you like a dog
And all I want is to be with you again
With you again
Just to hold you like a dog
That's all I want

And, the first song on that album, "The Kiss," could easily be about getting infected with lycanthropy, though I'm sure the vampire community could just as easily claim it as one of their anthems (and probably already have).

Kiss me kiss me kiss me
Your tongue is like poison
So swollen it fills up my mouth

Love me love me love me
You nail me to the floor
And push my guts all inside out

Get it out get it out get it out
Get your f***ing voice
Out of my head

I never wanted this
I never wanted any of this
I wish you were dead
I wish you were dead

I never wanted any of this
I wish you were dead

And, as was pointed out to me a number of years back on alt.horror.werewolves in the primordial goo days of the therianthropy movement, off the Goth classic Pornography album:

The Hanging Garden (Pornography, 1982)

Creatures kissing in the rain
Shapeless in the dark again
In the hanging garden
Please don't speak
In the hanging garden
No one sleeps
In the hanging garden
In the hanging garden

Catching haloes on the moon
Gives my hands the shapes of angels
In the heat of the night
The animals scream
In the heat of the night
Walking into a dream . . .

Fall fall fall fall
Into the walls
Jump jump out of time
Fall fall fall fall
Out of the sky
Cover my face as the animals cry
In the hanging garden
In the hanging garden

Creatures kissing in the rain
Shapeless in the dark again
In a hanging garden
Change the past
In a hanging garden
Wearing furs
And masks

Fall fall fall fall
Into the walls
Jump jump out of time
Fall fall fall fall
Out of the sky
Cover my face as the animals die
In the hanging garden
As the animals die
Cover my face as the animals die

In the hanging garden
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

dang, I would never have the guts to write any post as long as that

I've only heard of two or three of those songs but I like them. And now I know of a few more to buy or download.
bombs and more,
lets hit the floor.
sleep deprived and betrayed
lets be very...very...afraid.

Off wolf and men is a good one. Hey are you going to add "slide me under the moon" from the Lycanthrope movie? :?

Rise from your grave, topic!

Resurrecting a dead topic!

http://www.playspoon.com/awf/index.php?id=137

This link popped up some time last year on Goldenwolf's Moonsong forum, and I thought its mention here was definitely worthwhile, since it's a legitimate, free download of some music, including two tracks specifically about werewolves ("A Wolf in the City" and "The Wolf Inside"), and at least one other moon-themed. A lot of the links are no longer there, but thankfully at last check the werewolf songs are. They're posted by the artists themselves, so they're NOT bootlegs, and they're free for non-commercial use.
