I actually got in trouble foe priniting this for the newspaper just because it said the word pornography. I think my teacher is an idiot. Anyway I read this on thurseday and the government has no right to do this cause it breaks the first admendmant all they are doing is getting the people to hate them more.
Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories. - Thomas Jefferson

I agree. I don't see how this could actually hurt anyone. Hell, even if the government can connect different search topics to different people, why would the government even care? Is it really gonna bother them that Freddy Smith, from Franklinton Louisiana, 888 Cake Street, SS# 678-09-3765, did a search for 'beastiality porn'? Nope. It seems they're just trying to find a way to keep children from accessing inappropriate sites, and I support that.Timber-WoIf wrote:um... how exactly does this hurt people? its not like you sign in with yoour name, address, and social security number when u use google. whats the BFD?

There is no can. Just a squirming mass of invertabrates.
If people really were so concerned about their kids accessing inappropriate material on the internet they should actually be parents and supervise their damn kids. I'm so sick of this crap. People support bull like this so they can sit on their asses and not actually have to take care of their children. Lazy little...
Ahem.
At any rate the loss of freedoms tend to start out small. "Oh, that's not too bad, what harm could it do?" Give them an inch and they'll walk all over you. Before you know it you've gone from free country to dictatorship. I don't like the idea of people getting into my personal buisness. It's not their concern. They have no right to that information and it pisses me off when they think they do. This is just an excuse to spy on people without their consent. Attempt number two at it, in fact.
It's such a waste of resources too. Doesn't the government have better things to do than to harass people about porn?

you may not, but all computers are registered and have info on who bought them, and the computers IP adress will tell them that stuff.... unless you use a illegal computerTimber-WoIf wrote:um... how exactly does this hurt people? its not like you sign in with yoour name, address, and social security number when u use google. whats the BFD?

The need a warrant to get that, and anyone who's really doing anything illegal will use an open proxy or something like Tor. Or they'll just sit outside a place with an open wirless access point.Searif wrote:you may not, but all computers are registered and have info on who bought them, and the computers IP adress will tell them that stuff.... unless you use a illegal computer

is it only needing a warrant if you tell them they will need one?Lupin wrote:The need a warrant to get that, and anyone who's really doing anything illegal will use an open proxy or something like Tor. It depends on the organization. Personally, I'd ask to see warrant before I gave any information like that. (Doesn't really matter since I only keep logs for >24h anyway)Searif wrote:is it only needing a warrant if you tell them they will need one?Lupin wrote:The need a warrant to get that, and anyone who's really doing anything illegal will use an open proxy or something like Tor. Plus, most foreign companies would probably ignore the warrant.

i guess i'm just crazy, but i have never really had any problems with any of the domestic spy programs Bush has set into place. I mean, BFD if some goon at the CIA or NSA or w/e knows that you're getting together with your girlfriend on saturday night, or you cant wait to see your grandparents this summer, you you wanted to by that product on the TV infomercial, etc. etc.
item: your not doing anything illegal, so WTF?
item: the CIA, NSA, w/e really wont give a damn wtf your doing anyway.
item: if it is something embarassing or taboo, the goon in question isn't going to track you down and tell all your family/friends thw dumbass thing you did
item: domestic spying is the only way to catch domestic terrorists. Several of the 9/11 terrorists were US citizens. and terrorist don't approach thier targets wearing a giant, dirty beard, white turban, and vest of c4 on thier chest holding a black box with this giant red flashy button in thier hand. So they aren't easy to spot.
...of course, if you feel the government is going to far, learning to much useless, meaningless, insignificant BS about its citizens in the process of trying to catch terrorists, fine; i hope its your f*** city that gets the pocket nuke the government missed because you didn't want it knowing you looked at porn on the web.

Actually...I agree. Parents are the ones who should be monitoring what kids look at on the internet. Unfortunately...the quality of parenting in the average family has gone down substantially. The government is being forced to fill in where parents are failing.Set wrote:If people really were so concerned about their kids accessing inappropriate material on the internet they should actually be parents and supervise their damn kids. I'm so sick of this crap. People support bull like this so they can sit on their asses and not actually have to take care of their children.
Example: My mom is a kindergarten teacher, who knows all too well how the quality of parenting has decreased. Fifteen years ago, the kids she taught were well behaved, respectful, fully trained in all bathroom matters, and knew how to tie their shoes. Now...they're little monsters. Half the kids she teaches in any given year come to school not knowing how to tie their shoes. She has to waste class time tying kid's shoes so they don't fall and hurt themselves and the school won't get sued. They're bratty, demanding, little devils. They don't listen to instructions. They bite each other, and touch each other inappropriately. Some of them aren't even well potty trained. Many of their parents don't help them with their homework like parents used to. My mom ends up having to teach them a lot of things that the parents should have taught them, just so she can do her job. She has to actually change their behavior just so she can have class, because the kids, when they first come to school, are often unruly. This is not to say that kids are getting worse...oh no...if it weren't for the parents, none of it would be like this.
Anyway...I don't think kids should be in situations where they can look at porn. However, when we live in a country where half the parents don't give a damn what their kids look at on the internet, someone has to step in and do something. I hate the fact that it's the government doing it, but somebody needs to. If only the quality of parenting hadn't gone down so much, none of this would be an issue.
In summary...I'm not in favor of the government monitoring what we put in search engines. I am in favor of parents taking care of what their kids see on the net. But...since the latter doesn't seem to be happening, something must be done. If this is the only feasible alternative, then I don't see any way around it.

It would appear to be a matter of government fighting itself--specifically, the Bush Administration (Executive branch) trying to defeat the actions of the Supreme Court (Judicial branch).
The Bush administration has been after the court system for quite some time, at odds with "activist judges" supporting "death with dignity" in Oregon and gay marriages in Massechusetts. And, the vacant seat on the court that Sandra Day O'Connor will leave behind is a critical one that could affect the court balance and conceivably threaten to overturn landmark decisions--specifically, Roe vs. Wade and the abortion issue--which I will not touch even with a whisker from the Great Smoke Persian.

Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...
