Personally, I'm going to attribute the use of CG to the fact that there is that water plays heavily into the script, setting, etc. Anything liquid looks like a nightmare in claymation, so this is a good film for them to experiment with Dreamworks CG.
Besides, who cares if it's CG. You still have the classic Aardman-style characters with close-together eyes and crooked British smiles.
