phpBB help

Post by Renorei »

Ok, I have a website, so I figured, why not put a forum on it? Anyway, I downloaded phpBB, unzipped it, and uploaded it to my ftp server. And now I'm...stuck. I've looked through many of the guides on the phpBB site, but I'm still not really sure what to do. However, at this particular time, I'm not really sure what my question is. I will be posting questions later.

(In case y'all are wondering...the reason I don't want to post my question on the phpBB site is because all those people are probably uber-savvy at using phpBB...and I don't want to look like a dummy.)

Alright...I'm rather lost. When setting up my forum, I was supposed to get something that looked NOTHING like this:

TOTALLY WRONG

If you watch the tutorial, it shows you what everything is SUPPOSED to look like:

What I should have gotten
(It's the install/install.php step)

Where did I go wrong?

I'm afraid I can't help you with this one. I couldn't figure out the phpBB when I had one either.

I thought that's what I did whenever I uploaded it.

No you're trying to install phpBB, which is a bulliten board written in PHP.

PHP is a scripting language.

Oh...so what would I have to do to get PHP on our server? Also, does installing it take up a lot of space?

That would require speaking to the admin of the server. Size is dependent on what gets installed.

Grr....this is gonna be harder than expected...oh well, I know her reasonably well, so maybe I can convince her to install it for me. Does that scripting language have a cost, and if it does, do you know (ballpark) what it is?

Hey does anyone know offhand of what some other good types of forums would be that don't require php? I wish I could use phpbb because it's so user-friendly, but I don't think that's going to work out.

I'm bumping this thread, because some new stuff has come up. I'm in charge of updating the SGA website for my university, and we want a message board. So, does anyone know offhand some good types of forum software and the languages needed to run them, besides phpBB and PHP? If possible, post links to forums that use that software.

Well, actually, I'd have to say that phpBB is really good... if you're running a LAMP server
Linux Apache MySQL and PHP, then you're doing good. There are other bulletin boards around - I don't remember the kind that were at www.dragon-tails.com, but I don't think those run on PHP. Looking from the outside though, it's rather hard to tell..

Besides, my websites are broke (possibly hosed) and I've got a lot of work to get them back up (which I'm not in the middle of) because I'm still waiting an answer of what I need to do to restore them from Tech Support.
