Stop reading from the Splenda ads...
I prefer "Beetlicious," myself.

I can't help it if I once gorged myself on 3 pounds of chocolate I bought at Trader Joe's...
I was going to make fudge...
But I couldn't wait.

Also, while a virus could be carried via saliva, it's a heck of a lot more likely that it'd be carried via blood. There does tend to be small amounts of blood in Saliva due to minor cuts and scraps during eating so this shouldn't prevent a person bitten by a Werewolf from being infected *assuming lycanthropy is transmitted via viruses.*

For convenience, I could see it being called a virus, even if technically it would be a "virus-like therianthropic metamorphic vector." Normal people would call it a virus, right or wrong. For that matter, so would the scientific community. They'd just have this irritating tendancy to point out that it's not technically a virus per se.

It would be no more a "pathogen" either, since a pathogen causes a disease, and lycanthropy arguably would be an upgrade, the opposite of disease. Even people who don't share our fascination with it logically could be compelled to acknowledge that it is more a gift than a curse, philosophy and religion aside.
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

Virus, pathagen, venom, werewolf juice, whatever. The name isn't that important in my book.

Wanna know why people call it a "virus? Because some people don't know the proper name.

I don't see any real problem with most of what we've been using. Virus may not be 100% correct, but it's still perfectly acceptable to the vast majority of people. Pathogen isn't terrible, either. I tend to refer to it as a lycanthropic agent on occasion; although, it could also be referred to as a catalyst. Vector is about the same as agent. Bacteria may or may not be appropriate -- probably better not to use that one.

I agree with Reilune that what we have is fine -- there's no need to be coining new terms.

I've often heard lycanthropy (well, "Medical Lycanthropic Disorder") compared to Rabies, which is transmitted through a virus. Maybe the virus itself needs a name, but that seems like the right way to identify it.

I'm naming my virus "Herbert".
