I see no reason to discard a tool just because it's not perfect. It actually does a much better job now than it ever used to.

The proper way to say it in english is twenty-two.
But it's still understandable, and it's better than nothing if you know little about the language.

true. But not all words are translated.

And sometimes a completly different word pops up.

I don't mind seeing the differnet languages on this board. Its Babelfish I don't like.
How about using WorldLingo? I find that site better than Babelfish, though it does sometimes have the same problems.

Heh, I wonder if anyone has thought of this. Somebody starts a thread and posts something. The next person goes off-topic. Then the third goes even more off-topic. Each post can't be a responce to the previous post. It has to be off-topic.

Hmmm...maybe its been done already. Oh well.

Ich weié, nicht warum dieses geschieht.
I think what took us off topic was someone wrote something in Japanese.

I'm thinking posibly a mod or admin should cut and paste some of the stuff here as 'randomnized stuff' in the non were section so we may get back on the once fun topic.

Not a perk: having to explain to everyone who does find out what you are that it's not at all like Underworld, Van Helsing, or Cursed. (At least, I hope to God it's not. If it were, I'd have to re-think my life ambitions and daydream about winning the lottery like everybody else.)

You didn't offend me at all. :D Its great to know more than one language.

Whats confusing is the type of language thats being used. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, ETC. may look the same. But there are some differences. What there are, I don't know.

Other languages are easy to spot and some I never seen before.

Lobohombre and Lobombre means werewolf in spanish. But notice the different spelling? Not all spanish speaking countries spell the word the same way. Also some uses a completely different word even though its still a spanish speaking country.

What I don't like is having to take what was said and place it into babelfish. On rare occasions, babelfish may place a word that wouldn't make sence. That or not translate it at all.

Again, you didn't offend me at all. Nobody did. :D

これは日本語だ。 This is Japanese.

这是用中文。This is Chinese.

이것은 한국어안에 있는다. This is Korean.

(I used babelfish for the Chinese and Korean, so those sentences might not make sense)

Both Japanese and Chinese are similar because they use a lot of the same characters (Kanji / Hanzi), but it's really easy to tell the difference once you realize that Japanese uses extensively a small set of characters called hiragana for most of its grammar. These characters are less complex-looking than the kanji, and appear in every sentence.

A few hiragana: あいうえおかきこけこさしすせそ
Compare with kanji: 私犬龍格好森虎

You can see that kanji are generally more complex on average (but not in every case). Hiragana characters take on average about two or three strokes to write, whereas kanji can take many, many more.

Chinese sentences are generally much more complex-looking than Japanese sentences because they are made up entirely of Hanzi, and lack anything comparable to hiragana.

As for Korean, it doesn't look anything at all like the others to me. If you look at it closely, you'll see that it's made up of a relatively small subset of strokes that it uses to make up each character. It appears very 'disconnected' to my eyes -- you can easily split up the characters into different regions: top-left, top-right, bottom, left-side, right-side.

So, to summarize:
Chinese -- most visually complex
Japanese -- both simple and complex mixed together
Korean -- a very small number of elements that are used over and over; very uniform

The Chinese makes sense to me. Though I can't remember if the middle character is 'with' or 'use'... so is it, "This is with Chinese"? I can't remember. I've been out of Chinese school for too long. :P
