We've now established as a fact that it's possible for fingertips to regrow. It takes about four weeks using today's bleeding edge experimental medicine. Not a big leap to picture engineering a mammal that can do it on one's own without help.

Oh, yeah, we did that as well.
So, we're getting closer, though we still have a bit of a ways to go.

At the rate we're going, we may just be able to mimic a salamander's regeneration abilities.
We may also find out why we eliminated that ability from our genome, in the first place.

One theory as to why we eliminated that ability from our genome was that, due to the fact that ages ago we did NOT have the knowledge or ability to disinfect wounds and keep them relatively sterile....it was of evolutionary priority to close and heal wounds quickly rather than perfectly regenerate the damaged tissue....which takes longer. Scar tissue is much easier for the body to produce in a snap.
But, if that's the case, we could easily live without this nowadays if it means growing back all sorts of damaged tissue....with the obvious tradeoff that you would HAVE to keep it clean.
Why can salamanders do this in the first place? I don't know....they're just showing off
