Interesting how you isolate the two... I'm not saying all furries are therian, or all therian are furries, but the impression I get is you feel you're either one or the other. I've met people who consider themselves both.

At it's most basic level:

furry, n.
A fan of anthropomorphic animals.

There are many different people in the furry fandom and thus it has quite a few facets. We are a diverse lot if nothing else. As a result if you asked ten people in the fandom what "furry" is you'd get eleven different answers. However, the definition above is furry at it's simplest and the only actual "requirement" to be part of the fandom. You just have to like anthro animals.

You can like them and not have to call yourself a furry. It's all just a matter of preference.
Scott Gardener wrote:To confuse things further, on a few documentaries on furries, I've seen interviews with people who really seemed more therian.
In some cases there's really not much of a line at all.

Was that directed at me or someone else?

Well...I guess that kinda makes me a furry then...how odd.

Well I guess anthro lovers were the first to be called furries until people started putting modern human clothes with big sword and the language of that of a human is when it started to divide. But to be honest I hate to be known as a furry.

There is something that I've heard said before, and have said myself on multiple occasions that I feel is the best defining factor that seperates who IS a Furry and who is NOT.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

If you desire to call yourself a Furry (for whatever your personal reason...or definition of the term is) then you are a FURRY.

Only a True Furry will place that label upon themself.

If you reject the label, and what you personally believe it implies, then you are NOT a Furry.

...in other words...

If you REJECT the culture, you are obviously not a part of it.
If you willingly EMBRACE it...you clearly are.

... it's that simple...

I myself is a non practicing therian. I merely wish to study this curious subject.

Indeed it is.

For those of you who are curious, the first definition of furry I ran across was on Manawolf's website. Her take on furry is here.

That was directed mostly towards Scott, my apologies.

Basic "media" furry (my term). I enjoy most furry art, movies, comics and stories. Fursuits, plushes, RP, etc. don't hold any fascination for me.

I have six Fox plushies, and one Wolf, plus a closet full of various other stuffed critters.

Never did fursuiting, but I've allways thought it would be fun to make one, even though I can't imagine when or where I would wear it. (Besides Holloween Parties). ...I'm far too reserved to ever see myself walking around a convention in one. (Never been to a convention either...they're all so far away...)

Just a 'None-of-the-Above' peeps.

Being infatuated with these elements doesn't mean I'm any of the above. Just like the fact I study Environmental Studies doesn't mean I'm getting my degree in it (though it is my second major). I do Environmental Studies but I am Anthropology. Big difference.

I do love art, furries, anthroporphic characters, etc-etc. I am, however, just human with some things to fancy.

:D

Hmmm...there is another post like this. I am a wolf therian. I was 'awakened' some three four years ago. And PariahPoet is correct, a therian in a type of otherkin.

The main difference between therians and furries is that therians eat furries for breakfast! :x Just kidding Short Tail, Hamster and General Von Wolf! :D
