There's no such set stereotype for werewolf hunters. Personally any generally recognized stereotype of a werewolf hunter stems from cartoons, hollywood, zealous extremists, and otherkins.
Even bag ladies can hunt werewolves.

Obviously we don't have a set stereotype since we've never actually
seen a werewolf hunter, but I'm sure any werewolf packs out there have dealt with enough to have developed a stereotype for them. My best guess is that said stereotype would be either the werewolf hunter with the least experience or the least reason to hunt werewolves. That said, the stereotypes would boil down into two groups: Paranormal geeks, and self-proclaimed crusaders.

In my uneducated opinion, meaning this would be my starting point: If I were to hunt werewolves, I'd take a large knife with me, a semi-auto pistol and a revolver (probably both in .45). Along with that, rope, chain, barbed wire and dynamite.
I'd find them by following the rumors, then hanging around looking for evidence. Then, when I thought I'd found the place they changed, I'd go looking there every full moon. If I found them changing, I'd wrap them in the wire and chains, and tie them down with rope (and the dynamite would be with them as a failsafe). If they got out of that I'd blow their brains out or blow them apart (only vulnerable to silver, my a**. The bits left over will sure as hell be dead).
If I could in any way learn who they were as a human, I'd abduct them and keep them until they began to change, thus proving it. If not, let them go or put them down.
Assuming either plan for capture works, I'd sell them to the highest bidder.
So, roughly, that's what I'd expect of a werewolf hunter.

Elephant-strength tranquilizers would work just as well, and be far less messy for either side.

I don't know how to use tranquilizers. Plus, it's not as simple as just getting the strongest one you can find, you'd most likely end up killing them.

Well, chains and dynamite would do a better job of killing them than elephant tranquilizers.
I mean, you could always lace a box of candy or a steak and send it to the werewolf.
And once the werewolf's taken the bait, you swoop down and clean up.

Chains won't kill them. The dynamite is intended to but only as a last resort.
Tranqs are not supposed to kill them but without any knowledge of the creature itself I'd probably kill it or, depending on the existence of mythological powers, might do nothing at all. Both of these are not good.
The same applies with lacing its food with whatever. I don't know what effect it would have and its not worth the risk when there are physical means with easier judged results.
