Nonsense, English is a language. If humans could come up with it, humans can learn it. They're human, they can do it. It's not like we're asking them to program a space shuttle in two weeks.

I was watching a news report where the reporter asked a group of field workers why they didn't just learn English so they could assimilate. They replied that they didn't want to stay here and become Americans, they just wanted to work, get a pile of money stacked up and go home to their families. That says something, which I thought was a good sign. It says they love their country, they just come here for the money. What is encouraging is that if they're given incentive to stay there, and have employment that allows them to support their families without coming here, then Mexico can be brought into the 21st century and become a thriving country. They have volcanic soil there, God knows how fertile that is. They could have kick-a**, rich farms there if only they didn't have red alert air quality, sewers and cesspools that back up regularly and open garbage dumps on every corner.

But, it's not up to us to fix their country. They have to do that. If we take away the tit, they have to stay there and improve their own lives.

No... But should that even matter?

Who's bright idea was it to keep dividing people with different languages and different locations?

It is wrong to force someone to do something they do not want to or force someone to not do something they want to do. In some cases this is paradoxal (taking out a genocidal dictator). But wouldn't it be nice if people started helping each other regardless of where it is or where anyone comes from? Not because it something you have to do but because you care about people.

It was a multi-parallel general consensus, I believe. Think it's called "diverse culturalism"...

The "force" question doesn't come into it. They aren't forced to come here. They come because they want to. They're not tourists, they can learn the language.

This isn't force, it's leverage.

Anyone who does business in a foreign (relatively speaking) country does better by learning the language and making an attempt to go with the flow, if not assimilate. A migrant worker is at its core a businessman. They're here to work in exchange for financial compensation. That's business. It's not limited to field workers either, military officers and corporate upper management go to school to learn to speak the language of countries they work in.

*Sigh* This is going nowhere. We're repeating ourselves. I'm done.

Sorry if that came out not the way I intended it. I didn't mean "can't learn it" as in they're physically or mentally unable to learn English. I meant "can't learn it" as in they're unable to find a teacher or to find an ESL class to attend, either due to lack of transportation or financial reasons.

You don't need to learn about it in an English class. My Art teacher learned Italian just by living in the country for awhile.

Oooh, good point. I kinda wonder, with the inequality between the classes there and the corruption, why there hasn't been a huge class war. That woulkd solve the class problem.

True...that is a possibility. "Learning through osmosis" is do-able, but again, some of our language might still be a bit tricky. I know if I had a choice, I'd want to take a class. That might not be an option for some though.
