HD-DVD will still be around for a month or 2. Warner Bros will release some titles on HD-DVD until May. After that....its all Blu-Ray.

Regarding Blu-Ray, I thought it would win over HD-DVD, then once the sales figures starting coming out it was much more clear.

A lot of geeks and techies point out why one format is better than the other. Blu-Ray champions pointed out the growing inevitability of what has become at last a reality--that their format was winning. They also pointed out the higher data capacity of the discs themselves--25Gb per layer, vs. HD DVD's 15. They also pointed out a bunch of techno mumbo jumbo that doesn't mean much to the average consumer.

HD DVD enthusiasts pointed out that their preferred format included less intrusive DRM algorithms and mandatory support for ethernet and 7.1 channel audio. This went over the heads of the average consumer, who did notice one thing: they were $99 at Wal-Mart for one weekend only, and you could send in for five free movies.

Yes, they were cheaper. But, if they have less capacity per disc, then you couldn't fit as much on there. So, they were not as big a leap forward. Cheaper than Blu-Ray and not quite as advanced--we already have regular DVDs for that. So their DRM wasn't as bad. Big, fat, hairy deal; their DRM is bad enough--since you can't record off an HDMI cable, and both players DO have component cable output, which, while being analogue, CAN be used for recording. About every feature HD DVD did have, Blu-Ray could have. Not every player nor every disc had it, but the more likely the feature was to be used in the real world, the more likely it was to be there.

I'm a little sad to see HD DVD go, but I ultimately expected Blu-Ray to win. I've got HD DVDs stockpiled, and I'll likely get a few more from the blow-outs in the coming weeks or months, or when they show up at Half Price Books. I'll also have to keep my eyes out for an HD-A30 on sale some time, since my current player lacks 1080p, and it doesn't look like I'll be buying a brand new one two or three years down the road.

What I won't miss is the consumer confusion, or the phrase "High definition DVD" to describe both HD DVD and Blu-Ray, since "DVD" is a proprietary term that doesn't apply to Blu-Ray. It's like calling both Lexus and Mercedes "high end Toyota"; Lexus is a Toyota brand, but Mercedes isn't. The term "Blu-Ray DVD" is even worse, for the reasons that Figarou pointed out--it's half true one way and partially true the other.

I wonder if china's gonna keep making DVDs to aid the ones moaning over blu-ray...

there still going xbox360s they just have to change the format or have a huge stockpile of HD-DVD in there hangers

The X-Box 360 HD-DVD player is an add-on peripheral. The games themselves are not HD-DVDs. By comparison, the PS3 console itself is a Blu-Ray player. PS3 games (not counting ones bought online and downloaded directly to the hard drive) are Blu-Ray discs. Theoretically, PS3-exclusive game titles have the potential to be even more mind-blowingly realistic and epic than they are now, because of the sheer capacity of data available. Most cutting edge games also have to be ported over to the X-Box 360, which has a built-in drive that reads DVDs, but not higher capacity next-gen. discs. (It's unclear whether the HD-DVD add-on was ever intended to support games recorded on HD-DVDs, but even if it were, it's doubtful this will come about now.)

Since the format war was ultimately a face-off between Sony and Toshiba, Toshiba's throwing in the towel is the end of HD-DVD. If they don't support it, it's dead. Even if Microsoft, Paramount, and the other guys wanted to hang on to it, it would just delay the inevitable and cost them in the process more than I'll make in a lifetime, as a doctor no less. When Toshiba bails on HD-DVD, it's dead.
