Geordi: "I told the captain I'd have this analysis done in an hour."
Scotty: "How long would it *really* take?"
Geordi: "An hour!"
Scotty: "Och, you didn't tell him how long it would *really* take, did you?"
Geordi: "Well of course I did."
Scotty: "Oh, laddie, you've got a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker!"

Spock: "Ahh, Mr. Scott, I understand you’re having difficulty with the warp drive. How much time do you require for repair?"
Scotty: "There’s nothing wrong with the bloody thing!"
Spock: "Mr. Scott, if we return to space dock, the assassins will surely find a way to dispose of their incriminating footwear, and we will never see the captain, or Dr. McCoy, alive again."
Scotty: "Could take weeks, sir!"

Sometimes that's how folks cope with loss. Now some folks will not feel teh loss as keenly, and they should mind their manners.

But lets not start gutting the person for making a boo-boo.
Some people do regard death that way and will encourage jokes in good humor to be made about them. One of the most infamous examples, I believe, was Graham Chapman's funeral; he had his ashes shot out of a cannon.

And as for Scotty in space, well... It wouldn't surprise me either way. His friends and family might prefer to think of him as a person as opposed to the only Star Trek cast member parodied more than Spock and Kirk combined and want his funeral service to be more down to Earth (pun originally not intended). On the other hand, the U.S. sends a rocket up, like, once every two weeks nowadays, so it wouldn't be too much trouble for them to take an urn up on the next flight (which Bush might allow at no expense since his reputation is all but in the crapper right now).

I'm thinking of making one with a red shirt to honor Scotty.

In fact, I'll work on one now.
