I have decided I want to make a furry costume. I'm not going to become a furry as in furry culture (I have my own culture, -scares people away-), I just want an amazing halloween costume that I can also use at Christmas parties.

Yes, the eccentric relative strikes again.

Problem is, I can't sew, so I will be using hand sewing methods I did as a child instead of a machine I can't operate, and using online furry site resources for the know-how. Itll take several years with my time schedual to complete, as well as money.

Itll be a wolf with a cat/monkey tail thing, black fur, and probably be wearing a leather jacket and shirt with it and maybe jeans so it'll be a partial suit.

I'm also making a great big black pair of feathered wings for other reasons too (not sure what those reasons are haha!)

I just think it'd be great fun when it's finished

It'll be me in my 'werewolf' form, or partially so, since my tail won't be wolf transformed, it'll still be in its normal monkey like form. So it's partially based off my theriotype(s).

Anyway I got my Uni results back, despite being drunk half the semester I did extremely well, Im going to get drunk in celebration!! Then play as much guitar as I can fit into this day!

i think thats an awesome idea...just wish i had the resources to attempt to make one...i.e. time and matierals.....money isnt an issue but all the ones ive seen forsale dont strike my intrest

I would love to have a go at making summat like that. Thing is, My wife is just about tolerant of me and my 'interests' as it is. I think a weresuit would be the straw that broke the camels back. Good luck with it tho. Look forward to seeing the finished article.

I have to make it from scratch, and I can't even sew properly. Time is the biggest issue for me. I can collect materials, but its mostly not knowing how the hell to do it!

Hopefully Ill be in America touring in a couple of years when it's done (Okay that's probably not happening but I can try) and I will stop around wearing it. Of course, I may be 'kindly' removed from my band, although many musicians are eccentrics. Pink Floyd, I mean I can plead Floyd Insanity!

It's unfortunate that your mate is like that! When I go out with a guy, they have to like me for who I am, and tolerate it, or it won't work. Especially my music and individuality. I think because I'm a girl, guys see my 'unique personality' as amusing and cute. (Erm...but anyway) People see it as immature, but I have a mature enough outlook on life to be myself without becoming a slave to this system...and still act like myself

. Since Im quiet in public situations, people don't notice it anyway so I embarrass nobody until they get into a conversation with me.

But anyhow, if she loves you, she obviously tolerates you

all in the name of love! If you make a weresuit, I guess just don't wear it around her. I know my parents barely tolerate each other...having dinner for example with them is extremely trying. Going anywhere with them is trying.

Since you're not making a full body suit, the sewing shouldn't be a big problem. I hand stitch my heads and I have handsewn tails. It takes a bit longer, but it's not too bad. One word of advice though- I'm not sure what stitches you know, but don't use the simple "in and out" straight stitch. It makes a horribly visible seam. The best method is a whipstitch with the occasional lock so it won't come out. It's pretty easy to do once you've learned how. It should look like this / / /| / / /| / /| / / You don't have to do it that frequently, but I'd recommend locking it at least on every 6 or 7 stitches. On the head fur if you can do that really close to the edge of the fabric without it coming loose it makes a really nice discrete seam.

I think I know which stitch you mean. I cheated in high school home ec, so I never learnt to use a sewing machine (I got others to set it up for me

). But I know what you mean. I used some really wacky stitches for my wolf tail (Which didn't work -at all-...the design was all wrong, it was odd looking).

The one thing I have a huge problem with is the inside head structure and making things like realistic teeth and all that. Im assuming the sites will help with that, so thanks!

Any more tips will be saved and appreciated!

Well, so far Bladesparks tutorials are the best I've ever found for making the details like teeth, realistic eyes, etc. For the teeth, I'd recommend visiting boneclones.com and taking a look at a resin wolf skull to see what the teeth are doing. With my 'rundi suit though, since I couldn't find any good reference pictures, I just modeled them after my own teeth, but made the canines larger and the incisors pointed.
One thing I've found though. Spark uses Model Magic for the gums and jaws, but it tends to fall apart really easily and isn't water resistant, get it wet and the stuff just melts. It's a bit harder to work with, but I use latex and silicone caulking for the gums and jaws and paint it the right color with acrylics.

I'm still sketching ideas for my first anthro costume. Once I pat down where I can get the supplies in my area, I can finish it. If I make this my project for before next A-Kon, it means I'll have to put aside the weapon prop I was going to finish. Tough decision.

Joanne, Michaels, Hancock, Hobby Lobby (sometimes Wal-Mart).

Joannes is usually best for fur, Hobby Lobby is usually your best bet for everything else like eye globes, plastic mesh, etc.

By the way, if anybody needs realistic glass taxidermy style eyes I make them cheap. ;)

I've never heard of Joanne or Hancock. I'm always going to art supply stores for my college supplies as it is. I suppose I'll try a few of the art stores around the college. I hear Artisan's has a huge selection. Any good internet sources for fur?

Good list of online retailers. Most are pretty expensive though. I'm used to getting the fur I need for around $20 a yard at Joannes. Fabric stores like that are usually cheaper than craft stores from my experience.
