I dunno, I'd feel kinda good that they thought my work was good enough to show as their own.

It NEVER feels good to have someone steal from you.
If you're old enough to hear cusswords 2 says it best.

No. Just no. Its one thing to borrow an image to learn how to draw it. Its one thing to copy someone's art and -say- you copied someone's art ( Inclduing photogrpahs! ).

Its something else to take an image, crop the sig and claim it as your own. That is against copyright laws. If an artist doesn't defend their rights, they loose out.

At least said artist above *nods to artis* did it in such a way as to be polite and direct. I have to tip my hat tho them ( him/her? ) because some online artists SPAZ and get nasty and harrassing. Harrassment is also Illeagal

I dont' mind fi someone used my art to learn from. That in itself is a compliment. I'm not going to tell them no, simply because as a Degree'd artist I was TOLD by my teachers to "copy the Masters" Literally. Like no kidding, direct from teh book tracing. But no-one is going to mistake my art for Divinci's art.

Online, its not so easy to decern.

So no. No stealing. Copying with permission, and copying with a statement attached SAYING its a copy is okay to an extent ( as long as the artist in particular is okay with it ). Otehrwise its a sue-able ( dur.., not a real word I know ) offense.

Of all 2 Gryph's rants, that one is by far my favorite! ^.^

I guess we just have different opinions on it. I have had people take my work (some PHP code) as their own. I wasn't too broken up about it. I just found it neat that they chose mine to steal.

There is a slight difference between code and visual art.., and that primarily has to do with the creator. ;)

Most ( not all ) of those coders I know adhere to some form of teh "Hacker Code". That information should be free. Free to share ( yea for shareware! and freeware! ), free to tweek and free to manipulate.

Visual artist tend to be a bit more protective ( as do some -other- coders I know ) about their art. Its just as much a part of them as their own identity. Not all coders put their heart and soul into their work, artist typically do.

As a baby-coder, I could care less if someone nabbed bits of my website code. Heck I'd post some of my tips and tricks to folks who wanted to know. But my art. Don't touch it with out my epxress permission.

This is reason number 2,365 ( exgerating a bit ; ) ) why I don't keep my online art pieces at anything above 72 dpi. if its really important, I'll add a watermark to it.., much like Corbis does to its Photographs.

Again.., it all comes down to the individual. :)

Multiple ways of doing it. There are 'digital signature" you can buy through Adobe, that adds a didigtal "watermark" to yoru art. So if someone saves it and tries to edit it in most ( not all ) phot-editing type software, they get an ugly watermark embedded into the image, no matter WHAT they try to do to get rid of it. That cost big bucks.

:P

The other way is to take your logo ( or sig, or someother designator ) and make it a slightly invisable ( transparent ) image. Then place it over top of your iamge.., :

I have some examples.., brb.

This is some examples of the logo being used for watermark purposes:
