Wow, I was that bad with the ranting, was I?
For those of you just tuning in, my
older brother's computer crapped out completely a long time ago (and that really should have been my first warning), so when the two of us went back to college, I agreed to let him use mine for writing assignments and e-mail. For this, these were the rules.
1) No downloading without consulting me first.
2) . . . Nope, that was it. Just no downloading without asking first.
A few months later, my computer started flashing the Bluescreen of Death at me. I'd installed a Zoo Tycoon 2 patch about a week ago so I thought that might've been the problem, but when I checked the Mozilla download history to find it, I found a bunch of JPG files in the download list that I didn't recognize, quite a few of which were from girlskissing.com.
And here's the part I
didn't tell anyone: when my father and I finally got it to stay on long enough to install CCleaner, it found 22,700 spyware programs. I know he downloaded a lot more than just some spyware and some trashy lesbo pics, because he completely overloaded the hardrive. The only positive thing I can say about his actions are that the monitor fizzled out shortly thereafter, so I would have needed to get a new computer anyway.
And yeah, my brother didn't apologize either. He just asked if he could check his e-mail as soon as I'd finished setting up the new one (take a guess how I responded). I can't say he's a little brat and doesn't know any better though. He's 23.
My mother always asks me "if your brother makes a lot of money in Vegas, why don't we move there?" and I've never said it, but I'm always thinking "is he going to be there?" What he did to my computer is pretty much just a chip off the iceberg of what he did to me last year (though I believe I've ranted about what he did to my college fund too, so I'll refrain from that), but personally, I don't wish him ill will. Just as long as he and I never set foot in the same time zone ever again, I wish him well.
Anyway, I'm with Set on this one. If you find someone has been misusing your computer, the very first thing you should do is password-protect your own account, delete the offender's account if she has one, and disable the guest account. And of course, don't leave it unattended; if you have to leave the room, either turn it off, or put a password on your screensaver. She might not be the type to plan on screwing up your computer to get back at you for keeping her off of it, but better safe than sorry.
