Silver Bullets

Post by Cinder »

It had been a long night, thought Morland silently. Walking through the backstreets and alleyways, mist swirled around his boots, rats scampered, their toenails and claws clicking against conceret and wood. "Come out, come out where ever you are," he said softly in a sing-song voice, a deadly smile graced his cold lips.

Something thick and solid moved behind him like lightening, far to big for a man, but about the correct size for a large Gestalt. The only traces of its comings and goings was the disturbence in the mists, that quickly and silently mended themselves together.

"Why are you so afriad?" Morland softly sang, his hallow voice echoed, sickeningly sweet and not far behind him a gunshot rang out, silenced to a soft, but puntucant "ffzzing."

Shara watched the mist intently, her last shot having just missed the beast. "Morland," she whispered over her com, "its heading your way."

Her intense silver eyes so unatural in the modern world, scanned where the beast was last. The gun loaded with silver bullets held at the ready.

"Morland," Shara whispered over the com, "its heading your way."

"Great," Morland replied.

Hot breath breathed on the back of Morland's neck. "So you did come," smiled Morland, with an un-natural grace he pivoted, pushing himself backwards, the old style 45. Colts in his hands. Without regret he fired, his body suspended in mid-air as the bullets bit into the beast's flesh, the ring of the shots deafening both of them in the cramped alleyway.

"Gestalt down," he reported into the com, standing and rising. He toed the beast and gave a sneer, even though its head was blown to pieces. Wisely Morland walked away and cast this memory out of his life. "Ashes to Ashes," he smiled once more. "Dust to Dust."

Shara melted out of the mist and fell into step beside Morland. "Nice shooting," she said without looking at him. The two emerged onto a busy street, the crowd surged away from them, giving them a clear path to their destination. Her eyes betrayed no emotion as she registered all the faces that came into her gaze, searching, always searching.

"I never miss," said Morland, sliding into the driver's seat of his black and chrome Mercedes Benz. Turning the key in the ignition the car purred to life, all muscle and sleek perfection. "Home," said Morland, making the would-be question a statement.

"Home," Shara softly agreed as Morland eased the Mercedes out into the street. For the activity on the street, the roads were -as always- almost empty. People here walked where they pleased, giving themselves delight with sins of the flesh, boldy posted like ugly, neon grafitti. Silence settled into the car as they made their way out of the city's limits.

Cold, damp air coated the night, creating thin sheets of ghostly fog. Night dew had long since settled on the unkempt grass blades that covered the pastures along the black-top country road. Slowly, rising out of the night, like a colossal, grim monument to mankind, the dark protector of the human race, Vigilant Nox Manor.

Long ago, the Vigilantes of Night had taken up the sword, binding themselves under one house to fight the world of coruption and evil. And as such, each family pledged it's first, third, and seventh child to the House of Nox. Continuing a life that had been passed on from generation to generation, taken from birth and trained to be machines of justice. Under the rules and rigor training of Vigilant Nox, such a legion was created, passed on from generation to generation, ever growing and yet, still closely knit, strong and sturdy.

Lance gazed out the window of his room on the second floor of the manor. Headlights were steadily approaching. Morland and Shara had returned. He rushed from his room into the manor atrium just inside the main entrance and driveway. Lance’s apprenticeship hadn’t allowed him to go on field missions yet. He was about to turn 18, old enough to attempt the trials and earn his place as a fully-fledged Vigilante of Night.

Morland and Shara had been his elders and superiors as Nox agents, but they were also his friends. He always wished he be able to go into the field with them and finally be able to help. Next week maybe, but for now he would just have to hang off of the stories that told upon their return.

Lance came out of the front entrance of the manner into the dark night as Morland and Shara got out of the car. “That was quick.” Lance said grinning “Are you guys getting faster of are the beasts just getting dumber?”

Kate crouched over the body of her brother. She swore, then glanced around and headed off into the night. It wasn't likely that they would come back, but there was no telling. She'd told him not to go into the city, but the forbidden always attaracts. He'd been getting more reckless lately. Guys always did, and when they did, it was her job to watch over them. At twenty-three, he'd said he wasn't scared of death. It wasn't his death that mattered, particularily, but the Tribe had been gradually dwindling, and the Viligantes of Night had picked the Dark Frost tribe off one by one.

Luckily, Kate was one of the few of the tribesmembers who was allowed to go into the city. She was nineteen. She was able to controll her shifts, at least, somewhat. Of course no werebeast could resist the chnage, if it came, but usually they could hold it off for a short time. She was practiced in doing so. It seemed tha there was a measure of control associated with resistance- the longer you could wait, the less clouded-over your mind was when you shifted- but guys aren't known for patience or self-controll.

She slipped into the shadows with the ease of a theif, gliding silently through the streets, passing with a nod or smile to the few she knew as she neared the house at the border of the small park. She dreaded reporting the news. Minor regenrative powers didn't mean she wouldn't hurt- the messenger usually gets blamed for bad news. She was supposed to have been looking out for her brother, but he had slipped away. Since he was bigger, stronger, she hadn't been ale to catch up with him without shifting herself, which was the last thing she wanted to do.

"Dumber," Morland replied sourly, his face turned to a sneer. Lance was a eager young pup and would someday make a fine Vigilante, but he lacked experiance. Morland made a mental note that he would take him out on the field one day.

Lance's duties were simple: watch the manor, share duty with the guards, and train. Morland felt a little pang of jealously for the young Vigilante, guarding the well fortified Vigilant Nox Manor, it would be almost like a vacation, a well earned vacation that would never come, at least not while he was still alive and breathing.

He patted the young Vigilante on the shoulder and passed him by, slipping an old werewolf fang into the boy's hand. "It is the Rite of Passage that the second apprentice is given the tooth or claw of the Master's Second Kill, just as the first apprentice is given the totem of the First Kill. Shara is nearly grown." Morland turned around and nodded at Shara in a respective manner, "Your Final Trial is at hand Shara, do you understand?"

Shara had waited patiently through the reuniting of master and pupil. Then came the question she had been waiting for, the emotionless mask slipped a bit as egerness slipped through, "i am always ready for a challenge."

Morland nodded, "I know," he agreed softly. "But remember, kill or be killed and that monsters come in more then one form." He paced away and gazed out of the large bay window, forefinger and thumb pressed against his chin in a sign of thought. "But you are old enough to know that," Morland dissmissed her with a gentle flick of his hand. "Get some sleep, tomorrow we will sharpen your aim."

You don't know what your doing, Morland, he gently scolded himself. Don't let anyone know your secert, not even the ones you have grown to love. And with that thought he dissapeared into the maze of halls, moving like Death's shadow.

Shara made a motion as if to capture Morlands essence and pull him back, but she stopped and let her hand drop. Turning back to Lance she said, "rest as ordered." She took one last look to were Morland had walked away, a tinge of guilt and a feeling Morland was hiding something beat at her, till she turned and walked toward her sleeping quarters.

Apparently the Dark Frost Tribe was having some miscommunication mused Morland. The wolf he killed was responible for two deaths. Either the Wolf had not told anyone or their King did not care, either way, it ment trouble. Morland knew he was being more than generous when he gave the Wolf three months to clean up his act, but the Wolf blew it tonight, his third moon since the warning -Morland had tracked the Wolf from his home- killing a young prostitute no older then 16.

"You promised me you would change," said Morland to no-one in particular. "Either you lied or someone wants your little Tribe very, very dead..." silence engulfed Morland in his roomy, cathedral ceiling study. "I swore to be the Protector of the Innocents, a Vigilante of the Night, a Slayer of Monster -no matter their form..."

Either way he had to reach someone in the tribe that cared about their losses. Standing and looking in the mirror, Morland studied himself. Long, softly curling silver hair brushed his shoulders, adding just a touch of softness to his angular face. Brushing his hair aside his gaze rested on a bladder pouch that contained black hair dye, beside it was a razor.

Soflty Morland smiled. A new look to find the causer of this evil, he thought. Lawbreakers that harm the Innocents, be wary of my many shapes and forms.

Shara sat quietly in her room, staring at her reflection in the large mirror on her wall. What made others fear her? why was she different? these were just a few things she thought about constantly. Her gaze locked on her images eyes, Silver, a curse that started far back in her bloodline. So far back no one could remember.

Her eyes then traveled across her mature looking face, everyone who saw her mistook her for being older, not so old it was ugly. But older. Shara looked down at her hands they were as steady as ever, if so, why had she missed? Her aim was as good as Morland's, she rarely ever missed.

Then the thought of the trial that was to come drifted into her mind. "I am ready," she told herself, even as her hands gave an involentary shiver.

Next Day

No sleep had comforted Morland, laying sleepless, staring at the ceiling of his canopy bed. Rising at false dawn's light he looked himself once over in the mirror, overnight he had transformed himself. Short black hair had replaced his long silver hair, and his dark eyes were how an icy blue. Gone was the weathered gunslinger and here was the youthful gothic punk.

Stepping into the bathroom he took the leisure of soaking in the shower, letting the hot water beat at his back and chest. Finally satisfied he turned off the tap and stepped out, patting himself dry with a large, fleecey towel and quickly dressed in one of his many gothic "costums".

Stepping out of his room, one in many in the Vigilant Nox Manor, Shara absently passed him by, her silver eyes dark with thought.

"Shara," he said lightly, waking her from her thoughts, "let us go to the gun range."

Morland's voice cut through Shara's thoughts as she drifted about the manor, she noded her understanding about the gunrange and followed him.

On the way Shara looked Morland over, his new look went quite nicely, she thought. She sent her body into automatic follow and drifted once more into thought.

Morland knew that Shara was as good of a shot as any of the Vigilantes in the Manor, but something had happened, he was sure of it. It was not her first job, riding shotgun, but then again it was not her first aiming at the wolf either.

Silently Morland fell into a rythm, an absolute void filling him up. Stretching after practice with Shara, Morland holed himself up in his room and began scheming.

Tonight, Morland told himself, you are going to meet with the Tribe, even if it kills you. You must find a pack member who cares about the deaths of both the Wolves and the Humans. Justice must be found.

Kate flipped through the news channels on her family's little TV. After an exhaustive night spent explaining just how she couldn't have done anything, she was utterly exhausted.

She absent-mindedly flicked past a smiling reporter telling everyone how horrible the ddeath had been, glancing at the clock as she did so. Then what the reported had said hit. She switched back, watching closely.

"...And though appearently the girl was far from the city zoo, it's appearent that she was attacked by a large animal of some sort. More details forthcoming."

She swore again, turning off the TV.

It was a large animal, of course, since you couldn't properly call a shifted 'wolf human... not if they didn't have any controll. It took patience and practice to be more than just a wolf while shifted- and whoever had killed (she'd be the one to hunt him down if the killer was still alive) was likely little more than just a wolf at that moment. Wolves and cities don't go together.

She groaned, thinking about how she would deal with this. It wasn't just that the Dark Frost tribe was getting smaller, it was that every time someone killed a human it was... well, it wasn't right to just kill. It was more than semantics, it was becuase it was like any other addiction. Spat upon by society, dangerous, and it gradually overcame your mind. Besides, killing just seemed wrong, anyway.

Kate shook her head and went to take a stroll outside.

Slipping through a series of underground laybrinths, Morland arrived at his second "home" dressed in this gothic best. He eased his secondary choice of travel out of the garage and fastened the chin strap of his helmet underneath his chin.

"I am heading to The Blue Moon," reported Morland into the com. "I will be back ASAP, but I am in need of some information first. If I am not back by dawn's first light, I'm dead."

"10-4," replied Lance's voice, which sounded a little surly. Hours before Morland had argued with Lance who desperatly wanted to go on this Solo. "No," Morland had said coldly, "I must find this by myself and I do not want to be responisble for the death of such a fine young Vigilante to-be."

The bike purred underneath him and he slipped away from the countryside into the concert jungles of the city once more, this time not searching for someone to kill, but instead, information.

Cutting the bike at the curb, Morland put on a sexy, young mask and walked 1/2 a block to The Blue Moon, a club where that the Dark Frost Tribe owned and ran, there -he prayed- he would find an informat and a source to the killings that had rocked the Tribe's world in a very unpleasent way.

Kate was messing around with one of her few non-werewolf friends in one of the small corners of the club. Her friend, an air-headed and gossip-prone brunette named Ann, giggled and pointed to the newest arrival.

"Ooh, lookie at that guy, don't you just want him?"

Kate laughed, concealing her real thoughts. She played dumb to keep Ann's company, since gossip was a valuable tool for information and Ann couldn't shut up. Behind the girly laughter though, she was studying the man. He looked normal, but there was somehting not quite right. Unable to put her finger on it, Kate remained disconcerted and essayed a grin.

"Oh, no, not for me. Sexy guys are always snobs. He'll probably take a look at you though."

Since Ann always got the attention, Kate could watch while most people focused elsewhere. Perhaps she could use that for her advantage now.

Part of the reason she spent her time hanging around the Blue Moon was to watch for anyone conencted with her tribe- any anyone who could do it harm. not sure which one this was, Kate giggled and poked Ann in the side.

"Why don't you go see if he's lookin' for company?"

Maybe she could figure out what to do with him is she could watch him react.

Morland stepped into the club a quirky, small smile on his face. Instantly his gaze fell on a female werewolf, but just as quickly as he came a bubbly burnette -that had been seated by the wolf- popped up in front of him.

"Hi," Morland replied in a low, hot voice. He leand agaisnt the bar, his hip thrown out. "What can I do you for?" Quietly, with a flick of his hand, Morland summoned the bartender and ordered two rum-and-cokes and passed one to the burnette.

"Hi," replied the burnette shyly, then smiled up at him brighty. "My name's Ann." She giggled into her drink, silently answering Morland's question. "What's your name?"

"Name's Sydney," Morland smiled and gave her a slightly mocking toast, he nodded his head into the female werewolf's direction. "I'm dying to meet your friend over there." Morland offered an arm, "Care to escort me?" he asked in a slightly devious voice.

Shara stepped into the bar, Morland had been acting suspicious, so she had followed. Her apperiance alternation had been swift, Adding make-up (spawn of the devil) and put in some washable hair dye (her favorite -Blue-) she had added blue contacts to finish off the disguise.

The bar was named oddly, Blue Moon. Shara slipped into the shadows, watching Morland intently as he talked to some airhead, who thought she could get somewhere. Shara snarled silently as the airhead locked arms with Morland and walked over to a table...with a beast?! Shara took another look around the room, there was several other beasts here.

She kept her discomfort buried deep, keeping her eyes on Morland, she grabed a seat at a dark table. Shara may have seemed to be checking out the guys at the bar, but her eyes were only locked on the table with Morland the airhead and the beast.

Ann giggled again, thinking that finally Kate was getting some attention.

As they sat at Kate's table, Kate smiled warmly, trying to hide her conviction that all was not normal, and said, "I'm Kate- see you already met Ann. What's your name?"

She waited for his response. This close she could smell and sense that he wasn't a werewolf; 'wolves always had a particular scent about them and displayed subtle but sure mannerisms. The Dark Frost Tribe had few trustworthy non-'wolf contacts.

"Name's Sydney," Morland smiled and gave her a solemn toast as he sat beside the two. Silently he had noted Shara's apperance and inside he was warmed over with joy, apprentice like master. "Everyonce in a while I come down here, maybe twice a year," he gave a delicate shrug.

Morland swivled around in the stool, placing his back to the women and looked at the blue-haired Shara. "Oh look," he smiled charmingly, although they could not see his face, "I have an admirer." He swilved around to face the two. "Honestly I do not see what women see in me," soberly he looked into his drink and swallowed the last bit, "I'm just an artist with little money," he gave a soft frown, "with the stereotype family curse."

Softly Morland hummed The Phantom of the Opera to himself. "I'm sorry, ladies, I must be an awful guest not talking and closing myself off." He gave a smile. "Please forgive my...habits." Morland's eyes twinkled brightly as he winked and gave a gentle laugh. He turned to Kate and softly whispered, his mouth barely moving, "Are you part of a Tribe?"

Kate replied with a barely discernable nod. She prodded Ann, who smiled in an air-headed sort of way and exused herself, winking to Kate in the process.

Kate waited or his response. With Ann somewhere else, they could likely talk more freely.
