Well - as for defending the recruiter's perspective - I've seen the truth get pretty skewed, and what's worked for me is just being honest. Why? Because you should never enter into anything that you don't trust.
Also, when ti comes to recruiters - it all depends on the person. Recruiters (as fantastical as it may sound) are human just like anyone else - some of us lie, some of us don't.

hehe... i talked to some army recruiters... they were all evil liars...
the Guard recruiters actually told the truith, and explained the policy toward ADD and the meds for 'em.
Marine recruiters in my area = dumbasses
"boot camp is easy, you get to play basketball"
"war is fun. you get to shoot guns and blow up stuff"
"you'll only be in Iraq for a week"
Air force: apathetic
Navy: kinda slow

You are lucky your President is just an idiot, our PM is a homophobe without a personality. He lied about harbour cleanup, seriously i was in town one day and saw white foam from the mill! gross
(Stephen Harper lite, now 100% personality free)
At least your President keept his promise to beat the living crap outta Iraq.
