As far as I can tell...alcohol and the color green. It's an Irish holiday.

That sounds very odd to me ??
I can't see anything in alcoholics to celebrate. And what's the particularity in the color green? Hmmhh ... the irish isle is called "the green isle". Has that anything to do with that?

Well...it doesn't really celebrate alcohol and the color green, per se. But, on an average St. Patrick's Day in the U.S., you'll see a LOT of green, and a lot of people drinking. Truthfully, most people don't even pay attention to what the holiday is really about, they just use it as an excuse to get together and party. Here is a wikipedia article about it.

It's just one of many Saints Feast Days, but since Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland (and a lot of Americans are of Irish decent), it's been upgraded to Halmark status.

And whenever people think of Irish cuisine, the only pleasant thing they ever think of is Guiness. Therefore, happy hours abound.

Ok.

The dementor glides up to Anubis, it's very presence chilling the air around, delivering a piercing cold that goes straight to the heart. All happiness is taken away the instant it arrives. Its sickly gray hand pulls back its hood to reveal an ugly face with a dark gash for a mouth. As it tilts back Anubis' head a voice can be heard whispering to him inside his mind. "Give in, do not fight it..." It almost seems to caress his face before delivering its kiss. The dementor's kiss, that which sucks the very soul out of a person's body.

Oh lighten up. It was a joke.

Blame J.K. Rowling for making them so depressing. They're her creatures. :P

Some interesting reading:

Saint Patrick
The change, does it wrack the bones and rend the flesh ? Yes, indeed it does. But is this pain and agony alone ? No, in fact hardly at all. It is the Sacrament of the Moon. The flesh flows and so do the endorphins. It is, in truth, the agony ecstatic; The Pain That Is Pleasure

It's also the one day of the year I don't wear green.

In Ireland, they don't drink 'green' beer on St. Patrick's day nor make a big thing about Corn Beef and Cabbage.

But North America has its own spin on St. Patty's day and while I don't pay it much attention, I smile at folks who are having a good time celebrating.
