I think most of this forum is too young to celebrate Lupercalia the traditional Roman way. No, I'm not insinuating anything, I think. :? :( Nevermind.

(After several minutes with Wikipedia)

Okay, it looks like Lupercalia was when people sacraficed a couple goats and dogs, rubbed their blood on their heads, then ran around in goatskins whipping girls and women with thongs cut out of the victims' flesh (not sure if this means the whips were made from the female humans or the goats and dogs). It was supposed to be a fertility type thing.

So, Happy Lupercalia! Let me get my goatskin and sacraficial dagger, then this party will really get started. :P

DICISNE LATINAM!?
what he said was "Holy wolf, he gives to me benefits/joys (pretio would have been better)! Happiness/Jubilation and praise for all, he-wolfs and she-wolfs.

How do you all not know what Lupercania is, such Latin noobs.

It was a festival of fertility in honor of the wolf that cared for Romulus and Remus. I love this day it means I get a free day in Latin! :D

Happy Lupercania :)

Io! Lupercalia!

Actually, I thought it was in Martes, not this month.

Wha-whoo! Goat's blood, running naked!

Actually, there's more obscure things than Lupercalia. Ever met anyone diagnosed with Kuru or cyclopaea? The first got it by eating the brain of someone else infected, while the latter dies in infancy because of a severe deformity that includes having only one mid-line eye. And, I dare any of you to say you've collected an American 1913 Liberty Head "V" nickel; only five were minted, all illegally by a guy who snuck in after-hours while they were preparing to start cranking out the new buffalo design.

That was Sancta Lupa->Femine ending, which would render as Holy Wolf-b**** (she) gives me benefits\blessings. Remember; Romulus and Remus
were suckled by a Wolf-b****, and their cult, the Lupii was one of the oldest cults in Rome, and the members of this semi-secret society were thought to be Werewolves themselves! And, yes, Happiness and Games for all Dog Wolves and Bitches...

There is one other thing... The word "Lupa" also meant "w****"... hwlwnk

Asto your question, Dicsne Latium; I can only say; Hoc Ille!

That makes it 5x more common than the 1933 Double Eagle of which there is only one known specimen in private hands.

National Geographic wrote: Whips snap as young women eagerly bare their shoulders for a touch of the lash, believed to bestow fertility. A priest offers prayers at an altar near the Lapis Niger, a sacred site paved in black stone that survives today in the Roman Forum. In the sixth century B.C. residents of early Rome---part of the Italic group called Latins---purified the community by honoring gods with the ritual of Lupercalia. First priests sacraficed goats and a dog at the Lupercal, the cave where legend claims a she-wolf suckled Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. Then they smear the goats' blood on two youths, shown here flailing at the crowd. Held February 15, the Lupercalia remained an important Roman festival until banned by the pope in A.D. 494.
I found this caption in a National Geographic as a part of an article about pre-catholic Italy. The issue was the January 2005 one.
