I think most of this forum is too young to celebrate Lupercalia the traditional Roman way.

Okay, it looks like Lupercalia was when people sacraficed a couple goats and dogs, rubbed their blood on their heads, then ran around in goatskins whipping girls and women with thongs cut out of the victims' flesh (not sure if this means the whips were made from the female humans or the goats and dogs). It was supposed to be a fertility type thing.
So, Happy Lupercalia! Let me get my goatskin and sacraficial dagger, then this party will really get started.

How do you all not know what Lupercania is, such Latin noobs.
It was a festival of fertility in honor of the wolf that cared for Romulus and Remus. I love this day it means I get a free day in Latin!

Actually, there's more obscure things than Lupercalia. Ever met anyone diagnosed with Kuru or cyclopaea? The first got it by eating the brain of someone else infected, while the latter dies in infancy because of a severe deformity that includes having only one mid-line eye. And, I dare any of you to say you've collected an American 1913 Liberty Head "V" nickel; only five were minted, all illegally by a guy who snuck in after-hours while they were preparing to start cranking out the new buffalo design.

I found this caption in a National Geographic as a part of an article about pre-catholic Italy. The issue was the January 2005 one.National Geographic wrote: Whips snap as young women eagerly bare their shoulders for a touch of the lash, believed to bestow fertility. A priest offers prayers at an altar near the Lapis Niger, a sacred site paved in black stone that survives today in the Roman Forum. In the sixth century B.C. residents of early Rome---part of the Italic group called Latins---purified the community by honoring gods with the ritual of Lupercalia. First priests sacraficed goats and a dog at the Lupercal, the cave where legend claims a she-wolf suckled Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. Then they smear the goats' blood on two youths, shown here flailing at the crowd. Held February 15, the Lupercalia remained an important Roman festival until banned by the pope in A.D. 494.
