By that, I mean werewolves that are sentient when transformed, in control over their transformation, ect. We used the word "Gestalt" for describing the form of the werewolves that is inbetween human and wolf, so what should we call our sentient werewolves?

I myself prefer the term "werewolves". Don't get me wrong, it may not be the most original name, but I've always felt there was a certain ring to it, a certain primal perfection in the term which sums up everything in a nice little package.

I agree that there should be no fancy name. 'Werewolves' works just fine. Unless of course there is a specific history behind the Freeborn werewolves that causes them to call themselves something different.

But I'd say keep it 'werewolves'. If you try to force another name for them, it's most likely going to sound lame and just that, "forced".

garou? Its already taken. White wolf uses it in thier "World of Darkness."

Besides..."loup-garou" is "werewolf" in another langauge.

Are you talking about a term to define the werewolves by FRANCHISE? Like, how they're called "lycans" in Underworld? You're pretty much talking about "definining" them by a term SPECIFIC to Freeborn?

I am going to agree with everyone who says that they don't need a special name.

I think it would not be in our best interest to make up some silly new name for one specific kind of werewolf.


"Werewolf" "Lycanthrope" ... That's what they are. There is no need to call them anything else.


Calling them "Gestaltians" or something bizarre like that, (like Underworlds failed attempt to sound cool by calling them "Lycans" instead of Lycanthropes or just plain Werewolves), would just sound weird.



They are "Werewolves".

I believe that Freeborn is going to set a new standard for werewolf fandom. It will likely set for everyone what the default Werewolf really is. (Basically it's what we all have invisioned werewolves are supposed to look like for many years now, but never really see it.) Beyond that people will get creative with it in movies that come out after it.

On the subject of what to call them....Call me a traditionalist, but Werewolves or Lycanthropes sound fine to me

They should just be called "Werewolves", nice and simple, and theres little chance of causing some sort of disaster within the werewolf community...

Yeah I think 'werewolf' is just fine. Things'll just get complicated IMHO if you give them each seperate terms...

In the script, just werewolves. If they ever bothered to categorize themselves, it would be either in terms of their mentality, or what specific pack they associate with, and not some sort of subspecies thing.

Unofficially, the werewolves of Freeborn will likely only be categorized for comparison to other versions. You might hear about Anthony Brownrigg's werewolves, for example, being compared to Wes Craven's werewolves or Joe Dante's werewolves. Or alternatively, the Freeborn werewolves being compared to the Cursed werewolves or the Howling werewolves.

It's worthy of discussion, but I don't think Freeborn will need to distinguish the different types of werewolves other than those that are good and those that are not. If werewolves were numerous enough that they could classify themselves, we'd probably have a very different movie in the making right now.

Hmm..... Herpialurian-American? I'm not technically in the genus felidae.

I'm so going to start writing that on forms under "other" for ethnicity! XD

Wolf in wolf form, human in human form and werewolf as a whole. Nothing fancy here.

Lessee- There's Lupans, WolfKin, Woofs, and Were's.

Why not get fancy and call 'em:

Homo Lupens Sapiens; var: Brownriggi- that' the taxonomic version.

Or, Figarouvians, if they throw duckies. They might even be divine: If you met one in a shadowed alleyway, you'd call him/her "Oh my GOD!"
(No wonder they're so hard to live with-they have a divinity complex! )
If they were pilots, would they fly Loop the Loups?

Just don't call them late for dinner!

I agree about just calling them "werewolves," though I've been informally using for myself the term "consensus werewolf" to describe the image of werewolves that seems to have emerged among fandom in general, which I use as a point of reference. The Freeborn werewolf is pretty close to the consensus. My own storyline werewolves diverge just a little by comparison.

The consensus werewolf: Is affected by full moons (as opposed to not), can shift at will any other time once conditioned (as opposed to those who only shift on full moons), can spread lycanthropy by bite (as opposed to only via inheritance or other more exotic means), is hereditary (as opposed to just by bite), is virus-like (allowing other nuances, such as transmission by sex or by contact with blood products), shifts into both wolf and Gestalt form (as opposed to only one or the other), retains memory and cognizence with shifted form (as opposed to becoming a dumb monster or regular feral wolf), and gets bigger with shifting (as opposed to preserving mass and conventional physics). Silver is toxic to the consensus werewolf, and the consensus lycanthrope has substantial regenerative powers. The consensus werewolf also has heightened senses even in human form, though more so as wolf or Gestalt. The consensus werewolf lacks bizarre or unnatural powers such as walking on walls, teleporting through mirrors, or making enemies' eyes explode with demonic chants. Life expectancy is better than human, but not millennial or immortal.

Freeborn's concept images, script leaks, and other inside information trickled to us cuts it pretty close. No mention about life expectancy, and the physics / mass issue is skirted around--size appears to grow, but it could just be very good body sculpting and fur placement--improved strength and agility help enhance the look of increased size if that is indeed the case. Unless someone else beats it to the punch, it'll the the first movie ever to feature the archetypal consensus werewolf.
