What if the world was going to end and the only people who could stop it are in hiding (like werewolves and other beings with unique abilites combined with extreme intelligence). Like let's say a hidden nuclear weapons facility was going to launch on a nuclear capable country? Let's also say that a heavily armed army was blocking entry.

Only replace nukes with that virus thingy...

The similiarities are rather scary (I went with a Virus instead of nukes... the nukes were introduced after I played a couple rounds of DEFCON). I probably shouldn't explain that right now... :p

People like that hide because they don't plan on being forgotten after the incomprehensible amount of trauma they get after going through throngs and throngs of "enemy soldiers" and finding out the true reasons for the "architecht hellbent on destroying mankind".

Just ask the long-dead british soldiers who survived the Zulu war. One of them was so traumatised he thought the Zulu's re-emerged in britain and tried to invade his village.

Then you have a pack of upright walking wolves with assault rifles and heat seeking missiles. walking towards the heavily defended entrance.

It's been done. I'm sure if you looked you could find lots of fiction that would answer your question.
