That Notradamus-fellow predicted a doom (no, not the 9/11 or anything but a BIG DOOM / armageddon) for a few years back and nothing happened. So no, I'm not packing my bags to Hell just yet. :P

Next time you post something like this... please explain it out in detail. Not everyone knows what 2012 means. :P I almost deleted it thinking it was a spam topic... but remembered what 2012 is.

The ancient Mayans came up with prophecies along with their super-accurate calender that was drawn out well into the new mellenium. Their calender abruptly stops at Dec. 21st, 2012. This was later discovered to be a part of their prediction that the world would suffer a great catastrphe that would basicly end civilization. Ever heard that song by Rush called "2112"? This legend is where the inspiration for that song came from. Due to how incredibly accurate the Mayan calancer was, some think that this prediction has some truth behind it.

In related news, a metor that passed Earth a few years ago was merely 100,000 Km from the surface when it passed. In outer space... that's pritty damn close (closer than the Moon), and had some astronomers worried. As it turns out, it's passing Earth again, and is calculated to be within 30,000 Km because the last pass was effected by Earth's gravity. (Some of the distances they mentioned are off since I'm guessing, but it's relative.) If these calculations are precise, the massive astroid will pass us by and never come back due to the final alteration with the gravity. If miscalculated, it could hit the surface and cause worldwide devistation... in late 2012 or early 2013.

Coincidence?

Really, i don't think that Dec 21st, 2012 is doomsday. I find no proof to it.

And Keabora, couldn't they just shoot a nuke at the meteor if it gets too close?

They may not work to well, setting it off course from earth is another way, if they get around to being able to do this.

As for the question, I think the world will be fine for now.

No, i haven't...but wouldn't those smaller meteors burn up in the atmosphere?

For the longest time, it was "we're all going to die in 2000." Some people used to say so casually it was like they were looking forward to it.

Then the new millennium came, nothing happened, and suddenly it's "we're all going to die in 2012." And again, it's mostly people like Avareis (whom I'm glaring evilly at) that, for some odd reason, want everything to be destroyed that are pushing for this belief.

I personally would have a hard time believing anyone that claims to predict the future, much less the calendar of a civilization that more or less killed itself off (didn't see that coming, did they?). I'm not saying disasters of that level can't happen (I wonder if the dinosaurs ever had debates like this), but I think anyone that wants to see the next big disaster in their lifetime is going to die old and bitter instead.

The legend of the 2012 doomsday has been set literally in stone by the Mayan civilization over 600 years ago. This isn't some "all of the sudden" change. That's why some people are worried, since all of their astral predictions were so incredibly accurate.

We can't nuke a metor due to some complications. First, it may not shatter if it's too large, so the explosion would have to be from the inside. Second, if it did blow up, the gravity of the fragments would cluster back together to form a loose collection of rocks the size of Delaware. So, instead of one big impact, you have hundreds of impacts. It would be like shooting the Earth with a cosmic-sized shotgun. Then again, the single large impact could have more lasting effects, kicking up dust and ash into the atmosphere for hundreds of years.

that sounds really...stupid

No one knows when the world is going to end...

oh question.... did the Mayans see Y2K too!?

it was so long ago...so maybe it ends on 2012....it happens when it happens...

But even if the explosion weren't large enough to cause the meteor to fall apart, could it not throw it off-course if we launched the nuke early enough? Or is it impossible to have a missile fly in the vacuum of space?
