I just pay the extra and have them put me out- it's called "Twilight Sleep", I think. I also need to have a driver, since I'm stoned for the next few hours. Yeah; dentistry=wuss-out, as far as I'm concerned.
All I know is that I go in with a bad tooth, and wake up with a good one.
Even if the tooth and all the surrounding territory is numbed; the yanking on your mouth and lips is a real test of nerves.
While I'm not all that happy having a dead tooth in my mouth with a crown over it; it beats dentures-so far...

Extractions aren't much better either. Particularly when the dentist has to brace himself against the chair and heave with all his might just to get the well and truly deceased tooth to part company with one's jaw.
No, you probably don't want to know how it is that I know that...

The worst part of any dental pain is that you can't distance yourself from it.
Twist an ankle; you can muddle through. Sprain your arm, you can go on.
Even a headache, you can build a "wall" and keep the worst of the discomfort outside.
That doesn't apply inside your mouth. The pain is literally in your face all the time ( Figarou, you missed that one).
You can't get away from it.
That's the problem with
any dental discomfort...
