Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
And guess what's selling by the bucketful this week?!
http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/460.html
FTA:
"In China, ANYTHING made with Chinese-manufactured milk powder before September 14th was PULLED from their store shelves.
In the US, this garbage is still being sold!
Foods at risk: ANY food manufactured in China and potentially any food containing milk powder. US food manufacturers imported millions of pounds of milk powder from China before September 14th. The FDA continues to allow to be sold.
This includes chocolate, cookies, cakes, and even things like packaged macaroni and cheese."
Check the candy you bought for Hallowe'en. Was it made in the U.S. or in China? Double-check if the candy contains milk powder.

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
Is it dangerous?
Edited to add quote from link:
"That's right. This poison that killed and injured thousands of people, mainly children, may be in US food. We're the only country that hasn't pulled it from its shelves."
Wasnt this what was in the pet food a couple months ago?

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
The thing with the FDA, is that they approve crap when it's convenient for them, not necessarily when it's safe. I knew about the milk scandal in China months ago, and knew it might impact their exports, but didn't know whether the US or other countries were taking any action.
Another example of the FDA, that I can bring to the table personally:
I received 5 Anthrax shots before that vaccination program was suspended because the factories where the vaccine was made did not meet FDA standards. Contaminated shots were causing untimely death and dismemberment (by very, very nasty infections) to soldiers. Where it normally it takes two to six years (iirc) to get a new vaccine, or drug FDA-approved, it took them, after September 11th, two weeks to approve the Anthrax vaccine. I am sure those factories would not pass inspection, even today. The difference? The vaccine was rubber-stamped because it was convenient.

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
Melamine is also a metabolite of cyromazine, a pesticide. It is formed in the body of mammals who have ingested cyromazine. Cows that eat feed that was treated with cyromazine can develop the chemical in their bloodstream, and even in their milk. Larger animals are less likely to show effects of Melamine poisoning. Melamine combines with cyanuric acid to form melamine cyanurate, which has been implicated in the Chinese protein export contaminations.
There is several occations over the last several years where Melamine tainted pet foods, and even baby formulas have come from China.
Take the advice of our political leaders. Buy American.

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
We don't really know, but here's the difference: Melamine contamination in chinese milk products was killing thousands of Chinese babies per month (and found to be the Cause of Death). Food poisoning across the US, last I recall, is only about 9,000 across all age brackets.
If a few hundred, much less a few thousand of our kids started dying from Melamine poisoning, we'd know about it. Melamine was used in China by certain dairies to 'fortify' their milk with 'protien'. It was supposed to raise the protein level of the milk, or milk powder. Many dairies in China use lots of additives to increase the market value of their milk, forcing traditional dairies who only produce 'natural' milk out of business. The melamine contamination scandal is a blend of capitalism and greed. I'm not saying that either are bad things. But for many, money comes first.

And to think I actually once trusted the FDA. Heh. I'm starting to doubt them much more nowadays.
I'm just curious as to how any government can let this happen? Isn't China a member of the United Nations? Shouldn't it have been addressed immediately, as well as announced to any affected countries!?
I think yes. With something like this it doesn't matter how many people die. It is a serious problem for a toxin such as this to be present in common foods!
Shouldn't this have showed up in some test done by the FDA? Maybe they just didn't feel like telling anyone.

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
A rogue Chinese dairy owner brought the Melamine contamination to the world back in July. The problem is that governments, including ours, failed to add 2+2 and realize that if Melamine was one one of the common additives, that milk and milk-derived products (chocolates, powders, etc) from China might have the toxin in it, and take appropriate action.
Two qualifications for government work that don't exist: foresight and intelligence. The moment we have either, the world would probably end (or work so well that we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves).

The official story says that the baby formula contamination made 9,000 babies sick. Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
I wouldn't trust the Chinese over their number of just 4 dying. They have crappy PR as it is. After all of the pet food and lead toys, they would cardstack as much as possible.
I'm working on a werewolf novel, while liking to stay up late at night and going to college. I'm going to be sleep-deprived when this is all said and done.

You can never trust imported China goods.

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
So, basically; Food ON melamine is okay. Melamine IN food is NOT okay.
I do have a number of melamine plates and cups and they are harmless...unless you count the food I put on them. Then it's Tums time.
I hope Vrikasatma is doing better, and tests negative for the stuff.
Hint: Try Kosher. The stuff really is better for you, even if you aren't Jewish.

Re: Food Alert: Melamine found in Candy
I have yet to find anything labeled Kosher here in Sweden. I might not be looking enough, though. I only curiously browse the supermarkets for differences between the USA and here.
I had kosher orange juice once. I didn't know that exists!
