NaNoWriMo!

Post by Kelpten »

It's that time again! Yes, with the start of November comes National Novel Writing Month! For all of you who didn't know this, November is the month to write the novel you never had the motivation to start. The goal is to start on November 1st and write 50,000 words by midnight, November 30th. Even if your novel is horrible, what counts is that you wrote it. I can tell you that it's a lot of fun, even though you sleep a lot less.

Here's the website. www.nanowrimo.org

Oh for Ra's sake, not you guys too...

I don't get NaNo. It eats people's souls and puts them on a fast train to writer's block. I guess the world is full of masochists, and that's dandy, but I don't like my friends disappearing for an entire month.

Set, have no fear. I'll be disappearing for the whole month because I'm in 3 bands AND trying NaNoWriMo. I'll let the writing slide, in preference to music that I'm doin though.

I was just thinking about posting this!

I am not going to try NaNoWriMo, but I'm going to try to force myself to write at least one chapter a week for a story line I've slowly been thinking up. Otherwise, I have too many AP classes to put a novel up on top of all that.

Gah! I try to take a break, and you have to remind me to get back to writing!!! It's day one, and I'm already 2000+ words in.

My novel: Galactic Empire Lykosa. And yes, they're werewolves; a whole planet of the suckers.

I really should get some caffeine. One show and two rehearsals snapped up my time this weekend. Two days in and 1977 words so far. Though I'm only posting the chapters on the Paradice forums for now.

It gives people an excuse to write and lights a fire under their a** to not procrastinate. I think it's fine.

I don't see why you'd need -someone else- to motivate you to write. If you want to write a story just do it, don't wait for a month dedicated to bad writing to come around.

What I REALLY don't get is why people think lost sleep and frustration are fun.

Also, it is important to note that none of the novels written could be really completed works. If the author wanted to move on to publish, he or she would need to get a lot of editing, coaching and other things to revise the whole darn thing. NaNoWriMo is good at producing a really long rough draft.

My real problem with it...

Post by Set »

See, now, I wouldn't even have bothered to read this thread had I not been bombarded with "OH EM GEE MAH WURD KOUNT!!!1!!1!111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" on a daily basis. I don't give a s*** how much anyone's written, I don't want my journals' friends pages cluttered with numbers or people IMing me just to yap about it.

You know, I just may throw my hat into this ring. I have been bouncing an idea for a webcomic around, but it should serve just as ably for this.

Now comes the fun part, having a seizure and slapping my keyboard to create some traditional fantasy names. Then trying to explain this idea in a semi-rational manner.

PS: No, there is no rational way to explain this. It doesn't even fit into a genre. Wait and see.

I better start writing again. Even though I have school, I take my manuscript with. Sorry, but I prefer paper, because you only need a source of light, paper, and a pen. So I may drop off for a while, due to this reminder. (I'm working in a computer class right now, so it'd look odd if I had a large notebook filled with writing, so I'll post now  .)

My muses are a gold dragon named Anzu, a black dragon named Mamori, and a silver dragon named Yuusaku. Yes. I have muses, because I really have an overactive imagination. :wolfpaint: I also love reading, playing video games, karate, and drawing. :D

But that makes my schedule swamped. :(

So why do they only give writers a month? I understand if they are a professional that has absolutly no other life, but there are students and people with other professions and interests.
I'm working on a werewolf novel, while liking to stay up late at night and going to college. I'm going to be sleep-deprived when this is all said and done. :sleepy:

Anthony Brownrigg, I hope you have the best of luck with Freeborn. RedEye, I also wish you the best of luck with Wulfen Blood. And for a bit of luck for both of you... :ducktoss3:

Pressure.

If you had two or three months to work on it, you probably wouldn't start typing as much as you could right from the start. But if you only have one month to write, you'll be more pressured to write as much, and as fast, as you can.

As a number of readers already know, I've written enough novels already to see me through the end of the next decade.

Why not be more realistic? How about a short story of less than 1,000 words.
That can be realistically done in a month's time, and won't herniate anyone's creative muse; not even with School and Life to deal with. :D

Hmm, interesting to see some of the famous names involved in this right now. It seems that Kelly Armstrong has been organizing a team of minions each year.

I'd say I'm going pretty good so far, nearly 3500 words so far. Not bad for two days work. I'm really liking this plot I'm developing.
Now, if only I could pick a genre...seems to be sci-fi/speculative fiction heading towards fantasy. Though, even I'm not entirely sure of the true twists of the plot.
Now I just need to stop building game mechanics to support the story...

Seeing these people with upwards of 20,000 words already, I have to wonder if what they're writing up is of decent quality, or even if they're just artificially inflating it. Though, I guess that is a valid strategy too, throw buckets of crap at the fan and then spend the last 20 days of the month polishing it.
