from what i understand the disease is cause from a fungus or mold (cant remember which) that would grow on the bread and when ingested would caause the people to hallucinate that they were an animal but it seemed to be a wolf more than usual

Actually, lichen is a symbiotic relationship between fungi and an algae-type plant that typically grows on trees. I haven't found any lichen in my bread yet, and I certainly hope not to find any Lycans in my bread. That would be a hairy situation, almost as hairy as the mold growing on my rye!

Ergot poisoning (a fungus) can cause hallucinations, but it isn’t the same thing as the psychological lycanthropy. From what I remember it may have actually been more likely to make a person think that they were being attacked by an animal than that they had themselves become one.

Hang on, Lichen is a plant, a fungi/ moss actually, that grows on trees lol, its everywhere!!

^ it being everywhere doesn't mean that it grows quickly. you might be thinking more of moss than lichen. unlike moss lichen can come in bright reds or yellows and can look like it has small leaves rather than moss. Lichens can grow in harsh environments like snowy or extremely dry areas, while moss is limited to growing in places with a lot of water. Moss releases spores instead of seeds, and those spores can only grow in water.

Brief explanation; Lichens take time to grow strong and durable.
While moss is short lived and is limited to wet environments.
So most of the fuzzy stuff you see on trees is more likely moss rather than lichen.

I have a Sense "Monstrous Lycan" in SL. Since the color of his coat is via the R,G,B system; I may just make him not only a Monstrous Lycan, but also a Monstrous Lichen, as well.
That way, the people I sim with will recognize me...

Well, the whole Lycan/Lichen thing did make me think of "Tree Werewolves", werewolves that climb trees really well and are camaflaged(Sp?) against the trees. The can then jump down on an unsuspecting passer by, lol! I can imagine them with lichen and moss and stuff growing all over them...
And, from what Ive heard, Lichen is actaully a symbiot(Sp?) between and algae and a moss...

There might be some growing on the underside of some rocks in the forest. However, I don't endorse eating random stuff you find in the forest, especially stuff you find growing on the underside of rocks and logs.

I always thought of the term lycan as a latin word but i was never truly sure myself as oppose to the girl I have heard from one of my friends that there is even a disease from olden age where the people would think a person was a vamp because of blood needs or cravings maybe there are wolf ones to like the one where people have a hair disorder somethin like that but who knows

This has only been brought up about a dozen times. If this thread doesn't take a new turn of some sort, I'm gonna lock it. It's being done to death with no new information gained.

I never heard the term 'lycan' until I saw Underworld; I always assumed it was short for 'lycanthrope'. Since, as far as I know, the phrase was coined specifically for that movie franchise, I would only use it in reference to the werewolves of that franchise. That makes sense, doesn't it?
