( Scoured the message board and noticed we didn't have a topic specifically for current wolf news. I thought we could periodically post news links, videos, or scientific papers to keep each other updated on wolf related news. Just remember to post your source along with the URL or link.]

Bone Deformities Linked To Inbreeding In Isle Royale Wolves

As the title implies, this article is about the lower back bone deformities showing up in 58% of the Isle Royale Wolves.
The four packs there comprise twenty-four wolves, all descended from one female and one or two males who crossed an ice bridge from Canada in the 1940s. Since then they have been isolated on the islands that make up Isle Royale National Park, so it's not a surprise genetic deformities are showing up. Researchers are questioning whether the Isle Royale Wolves should be genetically rescued. They are inviting the public to weigh in on the matter, through a blog on their Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Study web site, Isle Royale Wolves

We cannot let the evil hyooman hunters kill our brethren again! The beautiful and majestic wolves.

Wolf family love and life puts human family life to shame. (Mostly) Obviously...

Enjoying his steak of course. What does it look like he's doing?

Macabre jokes aside, hunting lobbyists think the economy will overshadow conservation. I wouldn't be surprised if the fed slaps on some of the "harshest" protection measures we've seen in decades. Obama is a super-democrat, and he won't shy from extending the government's reach in this area. Eventually.

I would have brought some for everyone, but you’d be surprised how few people an entire wolf pack can serve.

No doubt about this.

I’m all for restricting hunting endangered species, my primary concern is if he tries (Tries? He’s the Favorite child of the Democractic Party, there will be no “trying” with him.) to restrict hunting non endangered species.

I also love the word "macabre". It sounds like a tasty kind of meat pie.

Seriously, wolves make horrible waiters! One pack can barely handle a Bar Mitzvah.

Usually, that's when we eat them.

Very interesting news, Sioux.

However, this board is getting weird.

Interesting chatter.
Anyone else a member 'Our Team'? My apologies; I didn't read the entire thread.
Personally, not a 'delisting' fan.

I throw money at Defenders of Wildlife whenever I can afford it, and I have a monthly donation subscription going out to them, too. It's not much but it's all I can do, especially being in the UK and so far away from these Wolves in danger. I signed the petition to Obama though, and I'm certain he'll keep an open mind and do something about this.

@MoonKit: That'd be the tactless jokes (tactless from my perspective, anyway), I'm distinctly reminded of South Park. It's given this thread such an amazingly classy air, and so on topic too. :P

Okay folks, let's at least try to keep this thread on topic. Any discussion unrelated to wolf news needs to take place else where.

Wolves moving into the burbs?

As more and more wolves continue to move into the Rocky Mountain West conflicts with ranchers are becoming more frequent. Unfortunately, any wolf involved in the killing of livestock is immediately found and killed. Sadly, once a wolf kills any form of livestock, it's a sure guarantee they'll do it again.

Well like I said, Im not sure if there isnt anything that we can do.

heck we can go to congress and prevent this wolf kill off, but there might not be any garantee that it will go through or for that matter even happen at all.

No, mostly the farmers, and farmers have alot of power...and guns.

All right; here's a question:

What does owning a gun have to do with whether or not somebody likes/dislikes wolves or wildlife conservation?

I think it's more that a guy who dislikes wolves and has a gun presents a larger threat than someone who just dislikes wolves, or has a gun.

Nothing, and I didn't say it did...

I took the implication from here (then ran off with it). Sebiale, I was making sure that there wasn't a side issue hiding in there too (because farmers often do have guns; the amount of power they have is a lot, so long as they're picking their battles...).
