Can someone tell me more about Anthrocon?

Post by ABrownrigg »

A-Kon we're planning to attend at least.. but we're discussing weather or not to go to Anthrocon. What is the howlers take on that? (i'm trying different names to see what feels right) 8)

And are there any other cons out there, I know A-Kon real well.. but I'm con-deprived in general so I'm new at this.

I'm not entirely certain. I like transformation in general and werewolves specifically, but I'm very wary of the furry scene.

Never been to a fur con myself, as I hear some mighty wierd things go on there. Plus I'm told that they're a bastian of furry porn and well, I don't like that sort of thing.

Still, I wouldn't take my word for it, as I'm relying on purely second-hand information here.

I've been told plenty about the Fur-cons, there's not much werewolfing, there's just plain old anthropomorphic orientated stuff. I don't think it'll do so much for the development of the film.

(Loads of furry-porn, artists doing sketches, and fur-suits as far as I can tell.. but that's pretty obvious stuff, I suppose))

I'd be a bit wary about going for anything but my own curiousity... And to meet a firend or two ;)

WOO!!! :P I hope I see you at A-kon Anthony. Don't disappoint me.

As for conventions, almost all are the same. There is one big room where people can buy items. Artwork, t-shirts, toys, figures, you name it.

Depending on the type of convention, you have other things going on. Gaming, costuming, meeting actors, viewing rooms for anime, contests, and sometimes the revealing of new products or ideas.

Some conventions are more popular than others. Anthrocon has grown into the largest anthropomorphics convention where "Furry" fandom, are celebrated.
Project A-kon also has furry fandom. They dress up as thier favorite anime character. Project A-kon has been around longer than Anthrocon. Its more anime based. A fun place to be when you want to meet people. :P

I went last year, and I'm going to try to this year (especially if Devoured people will be their) 8)

People who love animals and anthro animals(human like) attend. Their are people who dress up as animals and sell art work(not all of it is pornish). There are seminars to attend on lots of different subjects like fursuiting, writing, ect. If you guys come, maybe you could have your own seminar, I'd definatly go! :D

Hmm... the plus side about going to a furry convention would probably be all the fur-suiters. You know, people whom make costumes of anthromorphic animals and dress up in said costumes.

Most those costumes are a little cartoony, however, you may be able to get some good feedback on your protetics and such by people whom actually know something about the subject.

I went to a Star Trek convention once, It was really boring before the stars of the show came on stage. I'd advise that you arrive at a scheduled time and leave at a scheduled time, just so you are not barraged by anything weird.

Other than that, there are other ways to promote this movie besides conventions. For example, going to sites that deal mostly with werewolf specific genres, or for that matter, transformation related, not necessary furry related. There is a difference between furry and TF.

What I suggest is that you go to where there are groups, yahoo groups, msn groups, That deal specifically with artwork regarding transformations and werewolves. and ask the moderator's of the site if they would allow you to advertise on their home page, NOT just in the messages. Look at trying to post advertisements at these sites as well as major TF and werewolf sites, but make sure that the sites you want to advertise on attract the "appropiate" audience to discussion, case in point, I have run across alot of things that do not involve normal male and female relationships..... Best advised that you ask someone who knows about the TF community to recommend you places to post links or advertisements.

Here are a few I know of off the bat:

http://www.transfur.com
http://www.tfcentral.com

AND you could maybe even advertise on artists own TF sites, maybe for free if you ask nicely, and if their art reflects the audience that you wish to attract to this movie.

The links I have provided above give links to other artists websites.

Hope this helps, at the very least if this is implemented, you may save yourself some marketing expenses.

Its best not to keep this film from non-werewolf fans. I think everyone should have a chance to view it. Promoting this film in just the werewolf forums is not enough.

Conventions are a good place to meet them. They might pull a few surprizes that can't be done on a forum. I'm looking forward to Project A-Kon. :P

Course if you are looking for a medium sized sci-fi con in the east, there’s always Marcon. It is about the same size as Anthrocon, but not specifically furry and not as anime as A-Kon. Though all are good cons.

I've actually got experience at a furry con, but I kinda missed the whole thing, as I had my nose buried in the video room the entire time.

I do know that Anthrocon has a very good reputation, not only as being one of if not the largest furry convention out there, but also as attempting to be more family-oriented. I do believe I saw pictures from this year's AC of two folks dressed up in ears and tails... pushing a baby buggy. And their kid was also dressed up. That's not something you're gonna see at a smaller convention, not by a longshot.

If nothing else, AC is always looking for interesting events to put on for people, and you can be guaranteed that the attendees would be interested in this movie.

Well I am a Dealer at Anthrocon, so I'll give you my take on it.

AnthroCon is the largest furry convention out there (second only to Further Confusion in CA) and has a really good reputation. This is a convention for Furs, yes, but it also attracts a lot of other animal people as well. Therians attend, as do anime kids, or those who don't consider themselves Furs but who like anthropomorphics anyway. As for how well you would do there, that I can't really say. I've not seen too many Furs who are all that interested in shapeshifters, really. There are some who are 'Howlers' (love that term, BTW :), but I could probably count the ones I have met on my fingers.

As far as the general feel about the con, about possibly seeing stuff that will squick you? Don't worry about it. I've seen more squickiness at a Sci-Fi con than anything I have seen at a fur con. AC and FC, at least, are -very- good about keeping those sorts of things under control. However, if fursuits creep you out, then a Fur con might not be your cup of tea ;)

I have been to many cons of different kinds and can say they are all the same. I went to Conifur and found it easy to just relax and have a good time like at any con. I know that Anthrocon is much larger, but about the same thing. Just stay out of the adult areas if that sort of thing creeps you out. If not, well... hey.

Bull. The only porn involved is in room parties -- that's when you schedule an unofficial event in your own hotel room, so the so-called porn parties are mostly just three or four guys passing around sketchbooks and watching the Discovery channel.

Furries would definitely be a solid fanbase for a movie like Devoured, at least so long as they are informed this won't be just another typical B-rated movie. There's only two really big furry gatherings, one of which has already come to pass, so AC is definitely worth considering.

Now that just isn't true. There is MOST DEFINITELY porn outside room parties. There has been at every con I've ever gone to, furry and otherwise. I expect Anthrocon would be no different.

I also expect it would be no different in that it is pretty easy to AVOID that porn if you prefer. At SF cons, it's generally in the form of X-rated comic books for sale in the dealer room. In furry cons, almost every artist will have some X or XXX rated stuff for sale (note the "almost"). They generally have the good sense and taste to put it in seperate notebooks than their more general material, though. Just don't open those notebooks labeled as Adult, and you'll be fine.

Both con types had groping and snuggling in the hallways and public areas, though the furry con had a lot more of it and it went to a higher level. You can't avoid that except to turn your head and/or walk away, but it rarely gets indecent. The easily squicked might get upset, but the sexually openminded likely won't.

Furry fans are indeed a natural audience for this type of film. Putting a display up in the hallway, with the address of this site and board, would garner dozens of new members, for sure.

But since the movie is only just starting production, and hasn't had one scene actually filmed yet, you might want to go to a furry con - perhaps even Anthrocon, if it's convenient - without trying to advertise the film. Incognito, as it were, in order to see what it's like and how you'd fit in any advertising you did. Since there's a furry con just about every month somewhere in the USA, it wouldn't be too much of a wait or too much traveling. If you're on the west coast, there's Califur (Costa Mesa, CA, late May), Further Confusion (San Jose, CA, mid January), and Conifur (Tacoma, WA, late October). Elsewhere in the country there is FurFright (anthro halloween convention, perfect for werewolf movie promoting, held in Windsor Locks, CT, late late October), Mephit Furmeet (Memphis, TN, early September), Midwest Furfest (no info for 2005 yet, but in 2004 it was held in Schaumburg, IL, late November), and, of course, Anthrocon (Philedelphia, PA, early July). There are others that I don't have bookmarked and don't recall the names of, as well, in such places as Texas, western Canada, and Florida.

Check at least one out, see how you can best grab this particular audience, and if you want to even try. Then bring your stuff to another con, or the same one next year.

That would be my recommendation.

Since porn is not my thing, I'll probably avoid it if I go...will have to see a little further down the road.
