Casting call

Post by Wingman »

As I've mentioned a few times before, I'm in the planning phase for the serialized web book/webcomic that I want to do. However, I'm going to need a good twenty or even thirty characters to flesh this out, and right now I have three. So...rather than spend the next six months trying to populate the place by myself, I'm asking you folks for suggestions and submissions. It doesn't have to be spectacular, it doesn't have to be a biography. I'll be happy to get them even if the character only has a certain amount of "screen time", such as someone with a terminal illness, or who is about to move away, or if you only want them to make a cameo.

I really don't want to have to do the whole thing where I pop a character out of the corner have force a "Hey, I've been here all along!" introduction. I probably will anyways, but I don't want to have to. Even just some bare personality and appearance details, I need something to run with.

As some details:
The web serial/comic(I'll likely write it as a serial first, and then draw it later) centers around a university-type school for magical beings. The age range of the students is generally that of a normal university, around 18-25 or so. The three characters that I have at the moment are all human Adepts with shapeshifting bloodlines.
Essentially I'm aiming for a bit of a grown-up Hogwarts. The story is going to start along with a new school year there, and it's going to go from there. Where it stops, nobody knows.

So I need help with students, teachers, and everyone else.

The setting is a modern-day alternate time line where magic, and demons, and shapeshifters and spellcasters do exist, and have for a long time. As such, the socio-political state of the world is going to be different than what it is now. To be perfectly honest I don't have it all figured out, since I've yet to comb through history to find good places to alter.
The short of it is that magic exists, and everyone and their cousin has some. For most people, it just appears to be 'luck', or 'miracles' or something else. Most of the time they're not even aware that they're using it. Those who decide to study it and train themselves can refine and harness it, above and beyond the instinctive uses. Such is Wizardry, and typically takes a long, long time to really get any amount of development (think 4 years of schooling for a handful of spells)

Certain people, a large majority of whom have a devilish bloodline, possess greater inherent magic without needing to spend months and years training and studying. They are called Sorcerers.

Those who possess magical talents higher than normal without being sorcerers are called Adepts. Unlike wizards, there is no training necessary, though they certainly benefit from it.

The magic system as a whole is a rather open-ended one. Basically, everyone has a certain amount of magic, and then what they do with it is up to them. Basic universal things are making yourself stronger, or faster, or getting a flash of insight, or temporarily ignoring a wound, or feats of luck. Though, untrained magic is temporary, even if it's effect is lasting. Longer duration effects require increasingly complex spells to achieve, which may or may not be seen as worthwhile. You can spend a month learning to conjure some fire, or you can carry a lighter with you, most people are going to pick the easier route.
A bit more on spellcasting is located here, on my wiki http://the-highway.wikidot.com/spellcasting
As for what my "magic" is, look here http://the-highway.wikidot.com/will

Regarding races:
Humans are still the most numerous and widespread race.
See here, for information about the less normal beings I've got running around.

As a bit of an index, there are:
Wizards: Humans who have gained access to additional magic through study and training.
Adepts: Humans who possess powerful magic inherently. They come in several flavors of bloodlines.
Wraiths: Those who have died but not passed on. They need to drain magic from others or fade away. A catch-all for vampires, ghosts, ghouls, and zombies.
Devils/Sorcerers: Humans who have a non-human ancestor recently enough to bestow upon them a bloodline that gives them special abilities.
Demons: Basically an amalgamation of all the supernatural beings out there, things like the Sidhe up in the UK, forest spirits in wildernesses woldwide, and the classical fire and brimstone types living way down south in a refitted Antarctica (now called Perdition). Demons don't have any human ancestors, and Devils are humans who have a fiendish bloodline.
Bloodlines are explained a bit more here, http://the-highway.wikidot.com/bloodlines
Really, "Demon" and "Devil" are catch-all terms, Loa, Fey, or any other local name can be used.

All demons, devils, sufficiently learned wizards, and powerful adepts all possess the ability to create their own little personal "pocket dimension". More on that here, http://the-highway.wikidot.com/demesne

I'm sure I'm not presenting this as best as I could, as I'm in the middle of an all-nighter between late and early shifts at work. The gist of it is that I need some characters, or character ideas, to use. Sign here to immortalize your character.

Oh man, this is some old stuff here. I'd completely forgotten I'd posted it.
Thanks for the contribution.
