Post by Anubis »

OK! sorry but i have to say some thing about the lone wolf thing. people thinks that being a lone wolf is cool but in reality its pathetic. Why? because its a lone wolf's fate to starve to death, alone! its the wolf equivulant of Bill Doetrev (i can't spell that name :( ) from King Of The Hill.

Yeah. If you're a real wolf in the wild and you're a 'lone wolf', that means there's something seriously wrong with you or you're a social reject. I try to ignore that fact, though, when someone uses that phrase in conversation, and just think of it according to society's definition.

(You might want to change your title to something slightly more specific....for example "Are lone wolves cool"? It's just an idea, it's all up to you.)

Not to mention inaccurate. Not all lone wolves want to be alone. Oft times they're a young animal, a male, who's gone off lookin' for love. Maybe he wants to start his own pack, or is a chickie wolf lookin' for Mr. Wuffright. Or it's an oldster, perhaps sick/dying. Wolves are not naturally solitary animals...just because you catch sight of a single wolf on the horizon, doesn't mean he's got no pack off in the woods giggling over the silly humans gawking at the lonester. Lone wolves are actually fairly uncommon, and almost never really intentional. Or that's my understanding.

EDIT: POST NUMBER 100! :woof:

You did sound a little pissed, but I agree with your mantra :D I would describe myself as a "lone wolf" only in that I do feel seperated from most other people and am misunderstood, although it's probably more of my own fault than anyone else's. I'm cool with being me (for the most part, just a few personality things I'm trying fix) and like the t-shirts and stickers say: I'd rather be hated for what I am than loved for what I'm not. Although the vast majority of people I've met seem to like me :D

I might have to bring up your "life's too precious" bit to my friends, as they're pissed off at everyone and everything and don't really enjoy much anymore (I wanted to hit one of them at the assembly we had. She bitched through the whole thing and I'm really close to one of the guys that was performing in it. You tell he was pissed too because everyone was sleeping or text messaging or do something else and not really paying attention to what they were trying to do for us). Alright, I've vented, I'll be quiet now

I was talking about natural wolves. Wolfies aren't antisocial creatures. They don't crave to be alone as do human beings. It's humans that gave the wolf the loner image...not nature. I meant no personal disrespect to Petard, BUT.
ya'll are silly
As an official born-and-raised Southerner, let me tell you: It's y'all. I normally wouldn't correct grammar, but this drives me NUTS. It's not a contraction of ya ull, it's a contraction of you all. Y'all. NOT YA'LL.

LOL Southern words are cool. I love the fact that we correct people's spellings of nonexistant words.

What about 'ain't'? It's a conractin of 'am' and 'not', so where does the 'i' come from? I guess 'i' just replaces 'm' because 'amn't' would sound stupid. Odd.

To Petard:

My comments were not directed in your direction (redundancy rocks). They were directed at all of society, who frequently concludes that most wolves are loners because they don't know much about them. The title comment in my initial post was addressed to Anubis, in reference to the title of the thread. Glad you're not the kinda guy who gets pissed. :D . Neither am I (though I'm not a guy either...)

I always thought it's a contraction of is not, but then that wouldn't explain the A. So am not/is not combined? :D

Hmmm, that must be the case. It can be used in circumstances where both am not and is not could be used, therefore it must be a combination or both, which explains the 'i'. Mystery solved! :D

It's! (da da da da dadada-da-da...)

Post by Scott Gardener »

It's! (da da da da dadada-da-da...)
The contraction is short for "it is," as in "It's hot in here." The non-contracted "its" applies to the possessive neuter. "The automaton flailed its arms."

Y'all come back now, ya hear?
You can't misspell something that's inherantly grammatically incorrect. It ain't natural. The pair of words "you all" is redundant, as "you" can be pleural. If you must specify a group, you can say "all of you." But, "you all" isn't grammatically correct. (I know, leave it to a guy from Texas to kavetch about the grammar of the word "y'all.")

What was the topic, again?
Something about lone wolves not being happy. It's funny, but a lot of wolf therians are also introverts, or at least start out that way. And yet, we desire the company of other introverts. Weird paradox, huh?
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

Etymologies can be a fun thing to know about.

Ain't ain't and word and I ain't gonna use it.
It is a contracted form of `are not.' It is also used for `am not' and `is not.' It was characteristic of working class London speech, and now of rural American speech, and was also used at one time in upper class British speech. 'Ain't' is a contraction of am not and is used also as a contraction for are not, is not, has not, and have not.

Some more information out of my own knowledge can be found here:
http://www.answers.com/topic/ain-t

Otherwise on Topic:
Being a lone wolf really sucks. People veiw it as being powerful and being able to sapport ones self, sadly most lone wolves can't do that, and all wolves want to be in a pack. Some leave packs because they can't get along, want to find another pack, or want to start their own. I think its another showing on how people incorrectly veiw wolves, both how them veiw them as being worse or better.

A double Negative is when two negetives form to make a positive or to affirm something.

Such as:
I didn't not eat dinner.

Didn't and Not are both negatives, they are saying 'No' and can both be used to say I had not ate dinner. Yet Not is almost saying 'No' to didn't, thus sorta cancelling each other out.

In other words; 'I didn't not eat dinner' is the same as 'I ate dinner.'

I'm not the best at discribing things but I searched up on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_negative

From experaince, when people hear both the negatives they often veiw it as a negative. If I said 'I didn't not eat dinner.' people would most likely think I had not ate dinner, unless they can see I was stating the opposite, so speaking with a double negative proves to be confusing, and often times people use them to mean the negative. Someone may say 'I don't want no nothing' to say they don't want anything, when truly they really are saying they just don't want nothing, as of having nothing.
