There are cohesive groups of Therians who have well defined leaders and the thing I notice about them is that they avoid referring to themslves as leaders. The way things seem to work in RL Therianism (or the parts I have personal involvement with and that's pretty wide since I'm an advocate for the community and an organizer of events in the US) is that a group forms and all the members pretty naturally gravitate around a particular individual and that's the way things go.

Most Therians I know have a real distaste for the terms "Alpha" and "pack" (I'm not one of them - words just don't affect me that strongly).
