Classic...classic game. Image

I had an original, stand alone, vintage "Pong" machine at one time...but I think my parents sold it. It just vanished one day, and they swore they didn't know what happened to it.

...riiiiigghhht...

Pong is good, but the best, simple, old school videogame is undoubtably "Tetris".

Tetris is the worlds one and only "Perfect" videogame. Infinate replayability...easy to learn and play, and yet allways challenging no matter how good you are. (It is allways possible to get a higher score). Even people who claim they "hate" videogames, play (or have played) Tetris.

"BreakOut"/"Arkanoid" was pretty good too. (Basically one player pong)

I'm going to have to go with Vuldari and say breakout and/or Tetris.

In order for a game to be replayable for me, it has to be mentally stimulating. Lining up colored shapes into certain spots or hitting a ball back and forth can only amuse me for so long. So, for me, tetris and pong aren't replayable at all.

But you can't beat an emu to death with the corpse of a gecko in tetris.

No, but several of its subproblems are NP-complete.

er... Pong proper came out in the mid-70's, variations on the game are older than that.

In that case...

"Classical" Image

As for Tetris having no replay value...

Many newer, more complex games are spectacular the first time through, but progressively less exiting the second and third times because you allready know what will happen next.

...with Tetris, you know how it will end before you even start. ...you will Lose...eventually. Yet...that does not matter. Tetris is all about the journey, and not the destination. ...and when you make it to the high-speed levels, I would have to say that Tetris is VERY mentally stimulating. You have to think very, very fast.

But to each their own, I suppose.

Tetris does not requite one to have a twisted sense of humor, or a violent streak. It by-passes all language, culture and theme barriers by not being a virtual simulation of ANYTHING. It is just pure gameplay. Simple...but nearly Perfect. IMHO

ON the other hand, if acting out your twisted, or just mischevious sense of humor is the main reason why you play videogames in the first place, I can definately see how a "mischief-proof" game like Tetris or Arkanoid/Breakout would seem insufferably boring.

...again..."to each thier own".

Yep, even a perfect player is destined to lose:

It's not that I don't think Tetris has replay value, it just doesn't have replay value for me. I've just never liked it. I like games that have fun characters and plot twists and new worlds to explore. Like Banjo-Kazooie, the Zelda games, most of the Mario games, Pokemon, etc. I even like your occasional shoot-em-up game if it's not overly bloody. Racing games are pretty cool too. Anyway, sorry for not liking Tetris. But I have to agree with you, it is perfect. Not fun (at least not for me), but perfect nonetheless.
