Two words: "The Howling." Looks like somebody hadn't heard this.Animation Nation says that the studio just wasn’t happy enough with the script. "They said that sequels should only be made if there is a really great story that demands it, and should be the domain of those who created the original film”.
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

I don't mind a long saga if it's got a point. The Star Wars trilogy, all six episodes of it, was pretty good. I don't care what they say about the prequels. (OK, having a skinny lady giving birth to twins was a little screwy, I grant.)
Terminator 2: great story; better than the original. That's a sequel that should be made.
Terminator 3: good effects and flavor, but weaker story. It actually undoes all of the great accomplishments of T2, implying that we don't have free will afterall, and that existance has indeed no point.
Terminator 4: Probably best left alone to the hands of several million fanfics, though I do want to try the ride one of these days.
Bottom line: when story content starts to suffer, that's when it's time to give a franchise a rest, or at least wait awhile, let a good script cook, and come back another day.
Three cheers for the Toy Story people. I understand they hesitated on whether or not to do Toy Story 2, but ultimately decided to go with it, because it made fun of the hype and marketing that sequels are often designed around--the collectors' obsessiveness, the next version of the toy, and so forth.

I completely understand what all of you are trying to get at, sometimes its best to give franchises a rest. *thinks about all the Hellraiser sequels* The first few were cool but the latest one...gosh or was it the latest one, was rather dissapointing in certain aspects not to mention that you get lost about which movie having who or what doing this and that. Am i even making sense right now? Even if i spent the time to rent all of them and watch them back to back there would still be quite a bit of confusion, at least for me. Anyone else agree?
Can you imagine a life without creativity?
