Computer advice please

Post by Renorei »

I have a laptop, which I typically keep in the living room, and a printer, which I typically keep in my bedroom. I am tired of carrying my comp back to my bedroom to print stuff. Is it possible to make the connection between them wireless? If so, how, and what do I need?

yeah there is... it's called bluetooth. some printers, scanners, and computers already come with it, but you can buy it separately. go to radio shack or curcit city they'll tell ya what setup you need. :)

If you already have a wireless/wired network, you might want to look into getting a print server:

Bluetooth: probably not what you're after. Bluetooth is a low-bandwidth medium with a short range. It's good for Trekkie-style ear buds to go with your communicator-ish flip phones. But, for a printer in another room, you need something else that can do a better job of rerouting the warp core plasma through the phase conduits.

Print server: This is the way to go. You need to have a Wi-Fi network to do it, but that's hardly a drawback, because if you don't already have one, you're missing out on one of the best things about laptops at home. (Actually, you don't even have to have a wireless network; you can connect to a wired network using a wired ethernet print server.) When you plug into a print server, you're connecting the printer to a network rather than an individual computer. Then, you install printer drivers on each computer on the network, and then, every computer on the net can print to it. This is commonly done in workplaces, but it's useful at home, too. It's what I do here. My printer, a higher end model, has built-in wi-fi networking capabilities.
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...
