I just noticed the neighborhood is on fire

And congradulating our own Anthony Brownrigg on his 666th post, I happened to notice out the window a police car pulling up to our front lawn, and two officers getting out. I wondered if there was some sort of neighborhood disturbance, which would be very odd, given the secure and friendly nature of our neighborhood. Then I noticed a big pillar of fire coming from just two houses away across the street!

Needless to say, my first thought was getting Cathey awake, getting the two of us dressed, and getting ready to run as needed, cats and dog in hand.

As we stepped outside, we saw an RV parked in front of the house; it was what was burning; the house itself was not yet touched, but the RV had exploded and emitted two more firecracker sounds as flames billowed from a hollowed frame that was once its front cabin.

It did not take long before two fire trucks and an army of police and firefighter safety officer cars filled the street directly in front of their house, and my wife and I watched them douse the flames. The RV is certainly totalled at this point, but the neighboring house was spared, as was mine and our other neighbors, and for that, I'm quite grateful. Even now, the lights of emergency crews still flicker throughout the upstairs office space as I type this, a reminder of how suddenly the mundane can break down into a startling spectacle.

Just had to mention it to someone, since it's such an unusual thing, so I'd mention it to all of you, since in a certain sense, you were here with me as it happened. One minute you're minding your own business, and the next, your neighborhood is on fire. I also want to document this feeling, as it's precisely in keeping with the theme and flavor of my werewolf storyline.

Same type of things hapend to me once. Got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and noticed an empty pop can on my desk, I took it down stairs to throw it away and noticed i dim flickering red glow coming through the back door. I thought someone had been pulled over, until I looked outside and saw flames! I called 911 and then ran down to watch them put out the fire, it was just the houses garage that cought fire, and it was seperate from the rest of the house so no one was harmed.

Kinda frightening, especialy agter a near-by school playground had been set on fire just a few days prior.

I guess we all had our moments with fire.

Here I am driving back home from a gasoline delivery. (It was an 8 hour drive.) A driver of an 18 wheeler fell asleep at the wheel just 1 mile ahead of me. He drifted into the guard rails on a bridge. Both the guard rails and the truck was seriously damaged. When I got there, I stopped to see if they was alright. The driver and co-driver were already out of the truck. They walk up to my truck and said they are ok.

Then the truck slowly caught on fire. The blaze became so big, I could feel the intence heat. I had to get my truck out of there quick since its a gasoline tanker. Good thing my truck didn't explode since I was near a big blaze of fire.

When I'm not at college, I live on a farm. Behind our hourse, we have a huge grassy field, and semi-circling that field, we have a forest, which we get cut regularly for the timber money.

Several years ago when both my older brother and me lived at home, we had an encounter with fire. My mom and I were driving to the house, and my brother was already home. My brother had apparently taken the trash out that day, and put it in the trash barrel, and set it on fire, like we always do. We parked the car, I went inside, and my mom stayed outside for some reason.

Shortly afterwards, she came running into the house yelling for my brother and me to come outside. We did...only to discover that the burning trash barrell had spread flames to our field (the grass was dry and brown at this point...a.k.a. very flammable). A big section of our field was now already black from being burned, and the flames were continuing to spread in an outward circle.

It was a race against time to stop it before it got to our timber trees. If it'd gotten to the trees, we'd have not only lost the money we would eventually get for the timber, but the fire would also have likely taken over the forest unchecked and spread like crazy, even onto other people's property. Quite literally, we prevented a forest fire.

Alcohol: that cause of, and solution to, all of lifews problems.

Came to mind as I read your post... hehe...

I'm glad that nothing bad ahappened... that's got to be startling. The only scary or near-death expirences have involved dead, cracking trees with me in them, so it dosn't really compare.

This isn't exactly about fire but it does make you ponder angels on your shoulder. My best friend, god love her, constantly runs late. Whether it be going to a movie, coming to visit, or going to work.

Anyhow, the other day, she was actually one time for a change and noticed while driving her tire was going flat so she pulls into the nearby gas station, fills the tire and goes into the store to get a drink. Walking out of the door she sees this lady backing up toward the driver side of her car and crash! She hits her car. They worked things out but my friend realized...had she been running late as usual and not on time, she would have been filling her tire at the same time the person hit her car. She could have been killed. Talk about counting blessings. :D
