Now, see, 2012 is the end of the calendar, but it doesn't have to mean an apocalyptic end to all life. Of course, it COULD be, but we'll see.
Personally, I believe it's all a bunch of BS and the Mayans simply decided that predicting up to 2012 was enough for them.
But, if it is the end, it'll be cool. Dying in an apocalypse is a really f*** cool way to die. Even if I'd prefer the world to not end so early for me. Or maybe it's the opposite, as mentioned in the link and it's the start of some awesome peace on earth kind of thing.
And as to that asteriod, we've got a ton of nukes. I say if it's course is too close for comfort we take and launch a whole crapload of nukes at the side of it to nudge it in a different direction that gives a Earth a wider berth.
Edit: Interesting note on the use of 2012 in media, like Scott's story. Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl is set in 2012, and IIRC, the PDA's dates starts sometime in December....

Yeah, but once upon another time, people beleived that the theory "All the world's government's are being controlled by humanoid reptile-men who live in a hollow Earth"...
AND THEY WERE RIGHT!

It really amuses me that there's still people who insist that the earth is flat. If the earth really was, then we'd die of thirst a lot lot quicker because we can't keep the earth still enough for the "excess water" to not flow off the edges to the unknown.

On December 21st, 2012; every living person with Mayan blood in their veins will explode violently, creating a stinky mess for the rest of us to clean up...
Actually, the Maya had invented what amounted to a gear-train calendar, where each day was "cogged" to the month, which was "cogged" to the year...you get the picture; every day was different and the day you were born on determined what each day of your life would bring...NOTE: This is NOT Astrological in nature, it's a set of cyclic ratios.
Yet, the Mayans did calculate the orbit of Venus to the point we can still use the data today- and all they had were their eyes ( and the only base twenty numbering system, complete with a zero)
According to Mayan belief the current world will "end" on that day, and a new world will commence immediately as their ratio-cyclic Calendar resets to effectively Day 0, month 0, year 0; and the whole cycle will begin again.
Appropriately, the current World is the world of the Water Sun. The next World will be the world of the Fire Sun.
Global warming, anyone?
Just in case, though- I'd stay away from any Mayas, in case they
do explode...

So it's a religious beleif?

A religous beleif backed by some very accurate numbers! Even if you don't take the god and goddesses seriously, the extremely accurate mathmatics are something to raise an eyebrow at. If the Bible said that the world would end on August 10th 2009 at 6:15 am you'd bet ur a** people would be in a panic. Luckilly, the book of Revelations isn't that precise. There are some die hard beleivers of Mayan culture out there, and they are holding up the signs that say "The End Is Near".

That's right. Now please stop derailing the thread. Most of us are interested in being serious on this subject.

So anyway, what could be done to keep the meteor from killing us all?

You know a lot of people see it more as a time of getting rid of the old and starting over. A fresh world...but not everything has to die for that to happen! A lot of people who agree with Indigos believe in a spiritual awakening and a better awareness for every one. So its not necessarily bad, guys. It doesnt have to mean death and destruction..just awakening.

I personally see nothing in it. The Mayans were brilliant, but they weren't psychic. If they were, however, hopefully MoonKit's right. Death and destruction? Not a happy thing. Who knows, maybe it'll lead to the end of war, prejudice and hatred.
...Yeah, I thought it was ridiculous, too, but we can hope.

They did, that's how we know about it.
Wikipedia wrote:December 21 — The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283).[7] The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed.[8] However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. The December solstice for 2012 also occurs on this day.
Also, it looks like this thread is debunked.
Despite the publicity generated by the 2012 date, Susan Milbraath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that "We [the archaeological community] have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012.[12]
"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."[13]
It's from Wikipedia, but if anyone wants to fact check it, the source is "Susan Milbrath, Curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology , Florida Museum of Natural History, quoted in USA Today, Wednesday, March 28, 2007, p. 11D."

So, maybe Ravaged Warrior, it could represent a profound shift in humanity (Maybe hope will return to America?) or technology (Maybe the singularity?) rather than a horriffic apocalypse.

If the information in the quotes I posted are correct, I think that's a good way to interpret it.
